It is the few stupid ones that make it look that
Research the organization doing the DE before going. Don't go to stupid ones. Talk to your friends about various groups organizing.
I just came back from WGI event with Trackmasters. Very high speeds and very competent organization. The open track group did not have any crashes and any drivers not following the rules strictly enough were deal with promptly(including myself for an apparent no point-by pass).
Most BMWCCA events are well run and so are PCA and Audi club schools. Single car accidents do happen but in almost all cases the driver is the only one responsible. Some happen due to spilled fluids but the same can happen in racing.
Also not every venue is a good venue in terms of safety. At the Glen the armco is very close but that is a factor in single car accidents. The accident described above is impossible at the Glen or any other place I go to. I will make a note not to consider Pocono much after this.
There is risk in DE, duh! But wheel-to-wheel racing is a totally different thing. I have plenty of BMWCCA friends who have been punted off the track during a race. Don't know anyone who had anything similar during a DE and I know a lot more DE guys than racers.
