    oil change instructions?

does anyone know where to look for oil change instructions for a 91 M5? i imagine this is a common subject, but i've searched long and hard through the archives and have come up short. bmwe34m5.net refers to the M5 for oil change instructions, but only vaguely. i'm not sure if its specific enough about the M5, including wrench sizes.

    thanks!

    Re: oil change instructions?

It is very easy to change the oil on these cars here is what I do:

    1. Drive front wheels onto ramps (so you can reach under the airdam)
    2. Open Hood
    3. Place drain pan below sump, remove oil drain plug (mine is either a 17mm or 19mm I can't remember)
    4. Let oil drain completely
    5. While it is draining place a towel around the oil filter housing (it will leak when you remove the filter)
    6. Remove the lid (10mm), careful let excess oil stay in the housing!
    7. Remove the filter cartridge (again let excess oil drain)
    8. Replace O ring (supplied with new filter)
    9. Drop in new filter and replace lid to canister
    10. Replace drain plug
    11. Pour 6 quarts of Oil (I use Castrol GTX 20w50)
    12. Start car and verify there are NO leaks
    13. Reset service interval light - Steps below
    14. Optional - Drink a beer you are done!

To Reset Service Interval Lights Cheap(you can also buy a tool...$$$)
    1. Open diagnostic connector
    2. Jump pins 19 and 7 with a short U shaped piece of wire
    3. turn ignition to run
    4. count to 10
    5. remove jumper
    6. turn off ignition, turn back to run (lights should be reset)
    7. Put cap back on end

Re: oil change instructions? Step 6a.

6a. Wait 2-3 mins for oil to drain from the oil filter housing (makes it a lot less messy)

    Re: oil change instructions?

i realize its been 6 months or so since your generous replies, but i just want to THANK YOU for this information. i've been wanting to get more acquainted with my M5, which i absolutely love, and i would just regret making a foolish mistake that would result in some down time. again thank you! mine has been a daily driver now for the last 5 years, and i have no interest in another car.

    step 5.5
Remove the filter housing bolt but don't take the lid off for a few minutes till its had time to drain. This is the spillproof method.
