Cost to replace and paint rear bumper cover?

I have a gash in my rear bumper cover. Just got an estimate to have it replaced and painted -- $1030. Seems excessive. Here's a rough breakdown: cost of new bumper cover is $570. Cost of paint $135. Tax on parts/material $45. Labor is $280.

Has anyone else had this done? What was price?

My mom had a fender bender and damaged the rear bumper cover on an Audi A6 wagon several years ago. That was the same price it cost to have it replaced / painted / etc.

Sounds about right. Had ours done about 2yrs ago, however ended up much worse. Took it to United Collision by Gwinnett Mall (I assume you're in Atl.) where someone broke in and stole the wheels and tires off our 4.6is and left it on blocks. United told us they would take care of it. Of course they didn't and sent me a bill for the wheels and tires which I had to turn in to my insurance co.

Hope your's get fixed without that kind of hassle. Just don't take it to United.

Scuffed the paint on our rear bumper cover. Took it off myself (when I installed the hitch) and the body shop (Panama City Beach, FL) repaired and repainted it for $300.

The covers are repairable. I'd pay money to anyone who could find the damage to ours. Good luck.

We had somthing like that happen. we had a small scrape on the bumper cover and had the dealer grind it down and put some sort of putty on it. They say it is a flexable putty. that saved in labor and parts. the repair bill was about 350, and you cant tell it has ever been hit. I don't know how bad the damage on yours was, but look into having it repaired that way.

If you got bumped, you need to make sure that the cushioning foam behind the bumper was not compressed. If yes, they should replace that as well.

Extremely expensive. You can ususally get the bumper cover online for around 100 bucks. Paint it for around 150-200 and put it on yourself easily and you save around $700. Body mechanics are far too over priced and charge you full price for parts when they order them for a 4th the cost. Thats where most of their profit comes from. Trust me if anything just order the part yourself and get a paintjob from a seperate paint shop, and if you don't want to put it on yourself you can go to any shop and say "hey can you put this onn for me" and they'll usually do it for around $100-$120 since they don't have the oppurtunity to gouge you for the price of the part.

I had a hole in the front bumper of my old SHO when the S.O. hit a Land Rover with it. The tailpipe of the Land Rover made a neat nearly complete circular cutout in the polyurethane fascia.

I went to my local auto body shop supply house and they have a special 3M elastic epoxy for repairing urethane bumper covers.

I removed the bumper cover (surprisingly easy to do, even on the X5) and epoxied the hole from the back and let it set up over night.

The next day, there was only a thin line in the front where the cut was. I carefully filled this in with touch-up paint and then buffed it out. It looked pretty good, for a 5-year-old car. Total cost, about $25.

This 3M bumper epoxy can also be used to fill in and repair scrapes and gouges in the face of the bumper. Of course, sanding and painting (with elastomeric paint) is also required.

If your car is older, you might want to look into that, or finding a used bumper cover from a wrecked or junked X5 as a cheaper alternative. If it is the same color, well, you might get off pretty cheaply.

If your car is newer, well, $1000 sounds about right to "do it right".

For me, that's about 1/10th the value of my car, so I'd be looking at alternative repair options.

Was that a dealer quote, by the way? Third party body shops might do it a lot cheaper, but it might not be as nice. I had a car repainted by a BMW dealer and they did a stellar job.
