Need some help here...
Hey guys,
I'm at my in-laws this weekend and my father-in-law has just noticed a puddle of transmission fluid underneath his rarely driven 1979 Mercedes 450SEL.
1) Should we replace it and drive it to the service shop and if so, how much fluid does it need if its completely drained? Also, what brand should he buy?
2) Should he just get it towed to the service station? (my idea...but he's cheap)
I know this isn't a question about my Z8 but could ya help a brother out? I checked the 1979 450SEL forum and they get a post over there about every 3 months...
Thanks.

Re: Need some help here...
Unless you know the location and extent of the leak, I would have the car towed. If you have a cracked hose or fitting, you'll pump the rest of the fluid out on your way to the mechanic's shop. If the leak is minor, you could refill the transmission with fluid (check level on the dipstick) and drive the car to the shop. Before doing so, I would refill the transmission and then run it through the gears (foot on the brake) and see if you can detect a significant leak. If not, you should be able to make it to a shop before causing any damage. Quantity and type of fluid required will be in the owner's manual. Hope this helps.Grease Monkey
