Hey DiS: Is this true?
Rookie forestery firefighters start out at $70k/year and only work 10 days/month? I'm talking about someone who has a college degree.

Close but not quite....
And I can only speak for the state... But in general, firefighters work 3-24 hour shifts per week which would equate to 12 days a month. Our lowest permanent (non-seasonal) firefighter rank probably grosses about 65K per year - and that is before the overtime that comes with big, out of area fires. Unlike management, they get paid for every hour they work. A Fire Apparatus Engineer, which is three ranks below me, probably makes as much if not more than I do in a good fire season. CDF is probably lower than many local municipals - I'm sure a Division Chief at Sac Metro makes more than I do!
As for the education...more an more entry level firefighters are going the junior college route and getting an AS in Fire Science. It's gotten that competitive over the past few years.
There now, aren't you glad you aksed...? :-{p

Not me. I don't have that may years left b/4
I can retire! A relative related this info to me a couple weeks ago. Knowing how things get blown out of proportion, I was curious to hear if it was true or not. Sounds like she wasn't too far off, not counting OT.

Lucky you Viv.
Lame duck.
Will you still talk to us after you retire? Or is it, where you will be traveling there is no internet?
I have 12-18 years left.

Wow, now I KNOW I'm swimming with the wrong school
Hey guys, looks like things are pretty much set in stone...
Flying out to Korea the 3rd of August and coming back the 16th of September.
Blah, it's so hot and muggy there...
But! Gotta sacrifice something for hot chicks, good food, and cheap alcohol.
The third being something I'm not supposed to touch for some time ;[

Actually Ian you have picked a good school to swim with. Enjoy your trip and don't come home with a wife.

Sigh, I told my parents about a potential gf and
they're making it out as if I'm going to get married.
My friend who just got married in July is telling me to get married as well, not to mention the owner of my fav. restaurant here was like, "You're ready to get married! Graduated from a great school and all, now you just have to get married and pop them kids out!"
Sigh... I'm scared :[
It's so disgusting here!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
Feels like I'm surround by water droplets, maybe because I am...
Stay cool in the bay everyone!

Don't feel pressured. You are too young to
get married anyway. Plus, you must make sure she's the right one. That doesn't happen instantly. Have a nice vacation!

Re: Don't feel pressured. From the pros
Ignore them Ian. Unless you feel the need to rack up a collection of wives and alimony. You really have to make sure that you would be able to stay married to the one you chose and not be miserable. Don't even think about getting married to anyone without knowing them for a long time and being absolutely content with them..
So, when is the marriage?
Think getting married is scary? Wait until you start thinking of having kids.
What do you think Viv?

After being married twice, yeah
getting married is pretty scary indeed. I wouldn't do it again at this stage in my life. But, I've been married over 20 years, so something must be right the second time around.
