    Z4 M Coupe in ALMS? New M3 GTR?

    The following is from the October, 2006 issue of <i>Bimmer</i>:

    Friedrich Nohl heads up the sport and touring car division at BMW Motorsport.

    "Nohl also told us that [BMW] Motorsport has spoken with Team PTG boss Tom Tilner about racing the car [the Z4 M Coupe] in ALMS, but reached the conclusion that PTG would have to build its own car from scratch since very few of the components from the factory kit would fit within the ALMS rules.

    Interestingly, BMW Motorsport boss Dr. Mario Theissen pretty much nixed any plans for a successor to the M3 V8 GTR, at least for the near future. Quoted in <i>Autosport</i>, Theissen said: "You can do many things, but not everything at the same time. We are flat out on getting our Forumla One team up and running, so we don't have the resources to do a new GT car or a car close to a GT (to race at the 'Ring). There is no project in the pipeline."

    Probably won't see a Z4 but never say never. Except for the original GTR's PTG has basically built the M3s from motorsport shells themselves so we don't necessarily have to wait for Germany to do the work. The existing GTR engine is in no way legal for the ALMS/ACO classes but the rules do allow an engine swap if the engine is within the mfg's regular lineup, but there's much to consider.

    Yeah, I think the chances are slim. I spoke with Bill Auberlen this weekend (briefly). He said that it probably would not happen. He said as fast as it showed up, it looks like it will go away just as fast.<html>

    In 2007, the ACO wants the temp of the cockpit of all P1, P2, GT1, and GT2 cars to not exceed 86 degrees F regardless of the weather which is asking a bit much.

    "Dynamic sound readings will be taken during the 2006 events. The method of measurement and the results will be given to the competitors for information. As from 01/01/2007 the sound emitted from each car must not exceed 113 dbA during the qualifying, practices, and the race. The measurement will be made at 15 meters [around 49.2 feet] from the edge of the track."

    Portland International Raceway gets no tax dollars and brings in millions to the city yet complains about (ALMS) noise for a few hours out of two days per year.

    More about noise: At PIR, cars are not allowed to exceed 115 decibels. At 113 db, teams receive a warning. At 116, cars are issued mechanical black flags and must pit to fix the problem. During the warm-up session, cars #3-GT1 Corvette C6.R, #4-GT1 Corvette C6.R, #23-GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and #62-GT2 Ferrari 430 GT Berlinetta all recorded decibel levels of 113-plus. Cars #50-GT2 Panoz Esperante GTLM and #51-GT2 Panoz Esperante GTLM each registered 115.8 decibels. Cars #007-GT1 Aston Martin DB9 and #009-GT1 Aston Martin DB9 each were above 116.
