    OBDII port fails to talk to smog test machine Grr!

    My 2000 M5 was in for a California smog check. The guys at the shop told me it just wouldn't talk to the smog test computer at all. We suspected that they might have damaged the OBDII port by pulling out my Davis CarChip while the engine was running.

    I took the car home and closed the door on the OBDII port (which jumpers a few pins) and drove a few cycles. After this, that the system started broadcasting good data (as recorded by my CarChip)

    On a return visit to the shop, the first tech said the M5 OBDII port would still not talk to the smog machine. Fifteen minutes later, a more experienced tech hooked it up, and got an immediate OBDII sync and the OBDII port becan communicating with the smog test machine. The car was too cold to test, so we unhooked it to drive it to temperature. I forgot to close the little door that jumpers pins on the OBDII port when closed. When we returned, the OBDII would not communicate with the smog machine anymore. We ran out of time and plan to try again in two days.

    I'll update you all. But have any of you experienced something similar?

    I have experienced a similar problem....

    My ODBII scanner cannot link up to my 2000 M5 either. Even after driving it for a while. Yet the scanner works fine with other BMWs :(

    Dealer mechanic just told me this is not uncommon on MotorSport cars. Not sure what the difference is. They find a way. Mine did the same at last non dealer smog check.

    I had same problem with Dinan software installed. Dealer hook up was smooth, but non-dealer smog test kept failing.

    There is a voluntary recall by BMW to have emu's software update to allow communication to inspection station computer--look in mrboard.com for recll bulletin.

    Just went through the same experience with my 03. Went to two different emission stations here in VA. According to the techs who tested the car it is a known problem that BMWNA does not acknowledge. Bottom line, after two failures the third station had to use an exhaust sniffer. It seems at least here in VA that if you fail twice the sniffer is required. Also, the first station entered the engine size as a 5 litre not 4.9. The correct engine displacement has a lot to do with the comm protocols and the type of test. If the second/third station copies the stored id data from the first test (standard procedure) without correcting the mistake you'll never pass.

    there is a recall for this by BMW NA


    I have a 03 M3..and there is a service update for the firmware to resolve this problem. I belive it also is for the e39 m3 because they do list it effecting the z8 also.

    By the way if anybody is interstead I am selling my 03 m3 6sp loaded with 36k miles. let me know

    And you can't test for a while after the update

    At least at my dealer they said that the ECU update cleared out the history, and it won't give a "ready" code until the car has been driven for a while. The car has to see a cold start, several minutes of low speed driving and several minutes of medium speed driving before the ECU will report that everything is working correctly.

    make sure that you do not have anything plugged in to yuor cigarette lighter whyke they are trying to link up the OBDII

    Finally passed!!!

    Well we kept trying once every few weeks. I'd run the M5 hard to warm up the oil and we'd hook up and see if it worked. The shop was nervous that they fried my system so they were compelled to keep trying.

    On the day it finally started communicating.. the first pass failed because the engine wasn't hot enough. Then it failed the output pre-test. The last test was all or nothing and... it passed! Whew!

    Sorry there's no real techical update. We just kept trying.

    I'll check out the recall next time I'm in San Jose.
