Thread: M5 no Match for Viper

oh you meant "viper no match for M5"
You do realize your comparing a 5 passenger sedan to an all out sports car. And while your E46 may have gone through some transmissions or differentials, did you ever think there could be some driver fault involved? I mean the Viper can probably handle abuse all day long, but thats because pick-up truck drivetrains can take a lot of abuse. I think the Ram is rated at around 10,000 lbs for towing and that is a lot. So go on impressing your buddies doing burnouts, holding your arm out the window (thumbs up), thats one thing the Viper is truly good at.
I mean do you really think its impressive that Dodge needed 8.3 liters to muster 500 bhp?? Yeah its got torque, but again, look at the size. The M5 V10 is 5 liters and is made for performance, it revs high and is an incredible engine, 10 throttle bodies, 40 valves etc. The massive engine in the Viper is so huge, its no surprise that it redlines at such a low rpm. If all someone cared about, that was considering a 100k-ish german car, was highway speeds, they'd buy a Mercedes with a twin turbo V12. And while they do weigh a lot, They'd walk all over a Viper at high speeds. Your tiny torque would be no match for the 600+ ft lbs (700+ in an AMG).
By the way, have you ever checked the top speed of your viper compared to the M5 with the limiter removed? The M5 does 204 mph, and if I understand that correctly, it would pass the Viper at the very slow 190 mph mark... Not only that but the M5 handles incredibly well, its typically compared to cars with only 2 doors that weigh even less than your Viper (such as a 911). How does the Viper do corners? I mean it does have huge tires, but theres no engineering in the suspension, it handles terribly, like its drunk. You'll get a ton of grip because the tires are so massive, but when you reach the limit, you'll need to replace more than a differential or transmission.
According to track-challenge, both the Viper and M5 went around nurburgring, results as follows:
E60 M5: 8:13
SRT-10: 8:13
Though around Hockenheim, the SRT-10 was about a second quicker.. All I know is Nurburgring is all about high-speeds

Re: M5 no Match for Viper
I agree that a viper may be faster in acceleration than an M5 but only to a certain point. The viper has more torque to offer but because of their truck engine inheritage, the power band is available at lower rpm than that of the bmw engine. In other words, if you drag race both cars up to 60, the viper wins all the time. however past 120 and up to 205 i am not sure it s going to be such a clear cut...

Re: M5 no Match for Viper
Uh, I believe the Viper won that race. At 0.47 in the video there is at least one frame in which the Viper is showing a final time but the M5 is not yet showing a time. I did a screen grab (with no Photoshop funny business!). The camera is positioned so that it is impossible to see the final times for the cars, so there's no other way to know who won the race.

Re: M5 no Match for Viper
I don't really understand the arguement. The only thing the 2 cars have in common is 500hp....that's it. The Viper is a 2 door, super sports car.....relatively stripped down & light weight, for speed. The M5 is a sport sedan. While the Viper is faster - especially at the low end in a short track drag race, it can't touch the fit, finish, amenities & options of the M5. They're worlds apart. Match up the Viper with the Vet & match the M5 with something like the Audi S6 (the Audi would lose the race).
The Viper looks hot, but if you need a sedan (and/or a sedan look) and you want it to be really fast, the M5 is a fatastic option; it looks like a sporty sedan with monster under the hood. I'm a Realtor & I have the '07 M5. Funny thing is half my clients have no idea what my car is or does & the other half salivate with jealousy over it!

Your DUMB!
You take a 500HP Viper and run against an M5 with 500HP on the LIE? You call that racing? Thats called reckless driving! The LIE is packed with people that have families! Families traveling everyday back and fourth from Brooklyn, ball games, ETC. The LIE stays packed with people! Then you take your 500HP Viper and you run around crazy on the LIE??? Are u stupid!!!! Your going to kill someone (maybe kids in a minivan) or maybe yourself! Take your Viper to a track where its away from innocent people & kids! Your no race driver! FACT! Your a reckless driver! And you dont impress me with how u beat an M5! You wanna run for real?? Take your Viper to englishtown raceway and run against other vettes & porsches! not a family sports sedan on public streets!

Re: oh you meant viper no match for M5
This answers all your hilarious questions comparing a wooly handeling car to something as prestine as a M sport engineered Bmw! Viper: Plastic Dummy Bmw: A real car engineerd around a family, Not a refuse sack. You know any Bmw is far supirior to most cars out there that`s why there is always a limited few who have to strugle to come up with something that can beat a Bmw...it`s all just plain jealousy! Bmw best engine of the year/M5/M3/330Ci/320D/330D..not even Audi can match that! And LEXUS well apart from having a quiet cabin their cars are a joke @ $160,000. BMW remain the cars to beat! afterall look at the new M3! Now that everybody would buy it has everything, Bngle is takinh Van Heudonk seriously! Can`t wait for the new Coupe`

Another Viper Idiot
Sounds like the guy that changed the rules at Mid-Ohio.
I was just out at there, and the instructors no longer are allowed to ride with the students. The reason, to quote one of the instructors, is "some idiot in a Viper decided he didn't need to brake at the end of the straightaway into turn one, and flipped his car with the instructor in it - broke his neck". Great.
Even with the newer 500 HP 2004 viper, both cars had identical times (8:13) around the Nurburgring. Again, I'll take my car over the Viper anyday on a track. You might keep up for a few laps, but driving that car at 9/10ths, eventually you'll find yourself off the track. They've got way too much torque and handle like trucks. Here are the Trackchallenge results:

Re: Whats wrong with working you butt off for ur kids?
Nothing wrong with spoiling your kids if that is what you want to do with your money. It's your money - either you earned it, inherited it or both. Even if I was a multi, multi millionaire I would never give my kid this kind of car. Of course I am one of the "little people" who is not a multi millionaire, and we all know we "little people" should all be cleaning toilets somewhere in some digusting red state....
