Money Scam - RF FS Ads - Sellers Beware!!!

I am trying to sell two (2) BMW OEM wheels using a RF ad and suspect a "buyer" is part of a classic Internet money scam. Here are the details:

    1. I received an email expressing intrest in my wheels.

    2. We agreed on a price. Buyer said he would handle all the shipping details. He said he lived in Florida and would send me postal money orders for the wheels and shipping costs.

    3. Two weeks later I received brown envelop with NO return address containing money orders totaling 4.8 times the sale price. The postage stamp was from the "Republic of Benin", a West African country.

    4. The envelop also contained a letter with instructions on how to return the "excess" funds to the shipper. I was told to wire the funds via Western Union to the shipper in the UK. The transaction fees were to be deducted from the excess funds sent to me. BTW, Western Union only accepts CASH for wire transfers via their agents.

All these details add up to indicate a money scam. I deposited the money orders and waiting for them to clear. I doubt they will. I have a complete paper trail regarding this "tansaction" and once it is confirmed to be a fraud attempt, I will forward it to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Sellers BEWARE. We all want to unload our stuff for cash, but heed all the red flags and warning signs. Don't be a victim!

BTW, once it is confirmed this was a scam, I will post the names and email addresses used by the scammers.

    Regards....JL

Money Scam - RF FS Ads - CONFIRMED

The money scam I outlined in my original post has been confirmed. DO NOT do business with the following "people":

    1. "Mark Wallace" - [email protected]

    2. "Richard Tom Parker" - [email protected]

The money orders sent to me by these folks were deposited in my bank account and "cleared" making the funds available. Three (3) days later, the money orders were found to be fakes and the funds were taken out of my account by the bank. I was charged a $60 "Returned Check Fee", but this was refunded because I alerted the bank of the potential fraud when the money orders were deposited. Remember, just because a check/money order "clears" doesn't mean they are legitimate. It usually takes three (3) days AFTER they clear to determine if they are legitimate.

Re: Money Scam - RF FS Ads - Sellers Beware!!!

I have received two emails from my recent posting for this exact scam. The emails were from [email protected] and [email protected] Both offered more than I was asking and stated that they would send a "certified check" to which would include the price of the car AND the shipping fee that should be sent via wire transfer to the UK.

Money Scam - RF FS Ads - Sellers Beware!!!

In November I too advertised a pair of BMW e32 fog lamps on the Roadfly BMW Parts site. I was contacted by a buyer using a Yahoo ID writing he wanted to buy the lamps and wanted to have my mailing address so he could send a money order.

4 Suspicious money orders arrived by US Mail this past Wednesday. Same scenario - $$ far in excess of price of fogs; no return address. Mail originated from post near Nigeria.

They were immediately turned over to our Police Mail Fraud Unit who will conduct an investigation with cooperation of US Mail and Federal Authorities.

This is only the second time I have advertised items using Roadfly - and in each case I received bogus emails - this has been the only attempt to take it to the next level. I realize there are lots of wacko's out there with too much time on their hands. It's a sad commentary on our society.

I wouldn't have deposited the checks to my account to begin with, secondly if you wish to try it, at least open a separate account from your regular one, even a separate bank, in order to be sure they can't track the deposit and get your account number. they are in the business of taking what is not theirs.
