Re: Engine weight - Z8 vs. Alpina
My sources indicate the engine in the Alpina V8 Roadster weighs 88 lbs. less than the S62 motor in the Z8 but the automatic transmission is considerably heavier than the manual, so curb weight ends up higher in the Alpina (app. 75 lbs.) but that additional weight is farther back in the car. As a result, the weight distribution on the Alpina is 49.9/50.1 vs. 50.0/50.0 on the Z8. I also learned that while the Euro version Alpinas used special softer springs front and rear which lower the car app. 15mm, because of US headlamp height regulations, the US Alpinas used stock Z8 springs in front which resulted in only a 10mm reduction in ride height. This would seem to indicate that the spring perches on the Alpina struts are slightly lower than on the Z8 struts. One caveat to keep in mind: the published curb weight for the Z8 is way off. Listed ast 3494 lbs., a Z8 actually weighs 3685 lbs. So, without weighing an Alpina, I can't guarantee that the quoted curb weight difference is accurate. Hope this helps.Grease Monkey
