Re: no one here has a moutain bike?

I am not sure what you mean. If you mean laying down your mountain bike in the back with both seats folded down, then it will fit (as it will in most station wagons and other SAV, SUVS). If you want to use the interior bike rack then you have to take the front wheel off to use the rack. My mountain bike does fit using the interior bike rack (my road bike actually won't fit) but I also have a roof bike rack as I hate to put my muddy bike inside my nice clean x3!

No, not without taking off the wheel

I have a Giant Cypress DX 19" frame. I take the wheel off and back the bike in to the X3, (seat folded down ;-) ). BMW sells a bike kit for the storage hold down rails for a couple of hundred bucks to hole the fork in place.

    You can two two bikes????

We aren't talking about e39's here. If you want the bike (adult sized) in the upright position in a E83 the front wheel must come off. What is your point? The other option is to buy the Base support system and a bike rack for the roof.

    I re-read your original post

you never asked about the bikes in the upright position. I ASSUMED that. Sorry. I'm guessing you could carry more than 2 bikes laying flat and piled on top of each other. You could also stack a few on the roof and hold them with a few bungy cords as well.

    I wouldn't expect it to...

besides my mountain bike tends to get very muddy and I really don't want it in the back of my X3. My X3 is equipped with the towing package and I use a hitch rack. This is a simple solution that works well for me.
