Re: bmw x3 oil filter and drain plug

Filter; under the hood between the motor and power steering reservoir
    You’ll need a 36MM socket
Drain: under the motor you’ll see a 3”X3” hole in the skid plate
    You’ll need a 17MM socket and a short extension

You need 6.6 qts (BMW uses CASTROL SYNTEC 5w30)

Here’s a link to an online manual “http://www.[Oops!].com”

    Not Syntec....

Although the oil is made by Castrol, it is an A3-rated oil whereas off-the-shelf Syntec is a lower A-1 rating.

Rumor has it, that it's more likely to be Castrol's SLX-01 5-30 formula found from Europe.

Let's see, in a previous post you asked

about the oil capacity of your engine. Someone replied 6.6. You replied ya but my engine is a 2.5ltr does it also have 6.6 qts. I replied "Yep" but buy a manual, "yep" means YES. It really is 6.6 and you really should buy an owners manual and if you intend to "work" on your car a Bentley would come in quite nicely. There's a trend around here that the most basic questions turn out to be the longest threads.

Well, actually I mis spoke about the Bentley

I just checked on thier website and there is no Bentley for the e83 as of yet but having a full set of owners manuals would be a great asset to any glove box.

Maybe this will be the END of it

I did a lot of Frigging work to get this out of a 04 2.5ltr manual.
    Happy?

    Re: Not Syntec....

    A5 / B5
For use at extended oil change intervals in high performance car and light commercial petrol and diesel engines designed for low viscosity oils.

There is no A6 on this page http://www.racq.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/racq_cms_production/hs.xsl/Motoring_Maint_Repairs_Foun_factsheet_ACEA_oil_ENA _HTML.htm

Syntec is classified as A5 /B5

A1 and A5 are in the same category....

except A5 allows for extended drains. Neither one is as good as A3. This is the dealer-available BMW (Castrol) 5-30.

In other words only A3 allows for an HT/HS (High Temp./High Shear) strength of over 3.5.
