G55
APOLOGIES for change in subject, but lookin to get my wife a MB-G55. Anyone have or know much about these? The MB-G series board is a JOKE and full "gangsta" smack. Was hoping there would be more information and possibly G-series owners here as well.
Thanks in advance!!

Drives horribly...
A truly craptastic truck. Its all about the status and nothing more. If she must have a status-truck then get the new Range Rover. The best truck in that class though is the Lexus LX470. However, if she knows enough to specifically ask for a G55 (as opposed to a G500 for instance) ... then I doubt she'll feel important enough in a Lexus.

G55 is a bit over the top but sure it is nice and
one of the true real off road vehicles not a poser SAV's like BMW X5 and alikes.
The G500 is what you can feel as "enough" the G55 is something of an adrenalin shot to a racer. A little overkill but hey if you can afford to keep it and pump gas in it, makes perfect sense. BUT and this is a serious consideration - the new GL450 and probably soon GL500 and GL55 or GL63 is a whole lot more truck. Still capable off roader and an all around better performer. So unless you want to do serious off roading in the G55 then GL class is lightyers ahead of the G series. Still MB and still 3 diff and still everything you ever need but a little more in a more sophisticated package.
Larger cabin, more refined interior and better handling. (oh, handling is actually a handling not crwaling over like in the G)
don't forget the basic design of the G originates in the early 70's with military in their mind. Sure it can be entertraining off the road but how mnay times will you actually get into the mud/slush and harsh terrain in a 65+k usd vehicle ? if you do I suggest you buy 2 vehicle, a GL450 and a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and enjoy the little thing on a weekend and have fun in the GL during the week.
By the way I like the fact that you kept you 840 even though you have the Z8 ! Most people who had 8 and then went for the Z8 dropped the 8 out of their fleet !

Great fun!
I personally love driving my "G" (2005 G55 compressor)! It's great fun at an average 10mpg. That is however FAR better than the Supercharged Range Rover Sport I owned for three months and then traded away (6mpg). Had I done my homework and read consumer reports, I might have noticed that the Range Rover is #32 on the reliability list (last), meaning STAY AWAY from. It did drive nicely when it wasn't in the shop though!
The G55 is truly a TANK! If your wife longs to go offroad, there is no competition what so ever, but even as a daily driver it's great!
It performs very well at higher speeds (like glass on the freeway). A little rough on surface streets, and it tends to make you burn tires with its near 500hp, but you bought a truck! Status? Sure! Why not, you paid 105k for it. :)
I would definitely wait for the 2007 edition though (out now?), as it has DVD navi instead of CD, and Xenon headlights. A rumored change of the instrumentation to round from the current halfcircle speedometer from the old C-class didn't surface yet though advertised in Germany.
A word of caution: MB reliability is still not where it used to be even though the G-class seems somewhat unaffected if you ignore the frequent failures of the electric windows (I have had all four AND the sunroof replaced at least once - warranty).
Btw, I've heard that wifes usually don't stick with G55's for very long, so plan on using it for your own pleasure... :)

Re: Great fun!
Thanks for the info on your G55 Z8Alpina. As for your last comment, I AM planning on driving it within the first few months of the ride bouncing my wife around. What a plan I have! I had heard there were recurring electrical problems with the G but sounds like they were much of a factor with you to write off this vehicle as a 'junker'?!? Thanks for the comments.
Lazlo - I will NEVER get rid of my 840. Too beautiful a car!
Best,
Z8wannabe
