Battery for '73 2002tii
I need to replace the battery in my "new" '73 tii. Any suggestions that have worked for you? I believe the original battery was a Varta brand (which I found out either is or used to be owned in part by BMW) but those are not available in the US. Any maintenance free battery that anyone could suggest that you've had good luck with?sfy2905

Re: Battery for '73 2002tii - Group 42
You need a Group 42 battery. You can buy these cheap at any Walmart, Auto Zone, etc. Batteries from the dealer are nice, look stock, are likely to be "not in stock" and cost about $120 vs $50 at Walmart. Due to limited driving, I usually get 3-4 years from my battery.

You actually want to get a group size 26R battery if staying in the engine compartment. Group size 42 is a very tight squeeze due to the longer tii master cylinder. I have a group size 26R in my 1969 2000, going on 5 years now; $40.00 battery I bought from Advance Auto.

Re: Battery for '73 2002tii - Group 42
While a Group 42 is a tigh fit, its the proper battery and its not a hard job. Get a battery that has a strap for installing - much easier to install. Note that on a tii, you must remove the air intake on that side.
Also, for a tii, you need those extra cold cranking amps from Group 42.

Re: Battery for '73 2002tii - Group 42
Tim took the words right out of my mouth! I've been there done that. While a Gr 42 will indeed work, the 26R is a better & much easier fit (more cranking amps too)! It can also be used with the tii hold-down device, something the Gr 42 won't do.Mit freundlichen Grüßen
