Rey, yes is doable but the issue is that you won't
have security and OS patches support and all of that... But yes you can install a hacked version of OSX that is fooled into thinking that is being installed on the right hardware...I haven't done it myself but I am sure I can help with that if you need help.

Strangely, I have Vista on my new Laptop and
the speed is blazing fast. But I do agree with you that it can be slow if you have the dual stack running where you don't have a dual stack or an IPV6 backbone (DNS resolver and forwarder, etc). Just take off the IPV6 protocol (and possibly QOS) and you will see the speed.
I also have a desktop that I am running the Vista 64 Ultimate and it is possibly twice as fast than the Windows XP SP-2 installed on a similar box. I however have a IPV6 network with DNS resolver and forwarder running Dual Stack (Both IPV4 and IPV6).
But the biggest issue is that Vista is very demanding on the memory on it's default setting. The speed of Vista can be increased greatly by changing to a setting the hardware can comply with.
My favorite is still my Solaris 10 destop.<html>

If I like it I would make the jump and get a new system.
One more question, is there a windows emulator out there so I could run MS Office and pc games inside Mac OSX?

Yes, there is "Parallels" that will emulate the
entire Windows OS where you can run all your windows apps or games.
Keep in mind that there is a version of MS Office for mac already.

I wish RedHat will package a nice GUI interface
for their RH desktop version. They have a very good and solid business model behind that OS so they can truly be a viable desktop solution for the masses. Where windows is crap and MAC OSX too expensive, RedHat could fit right in the middle where the sweet spot is. Maybe some they they will....

damn, and I got stuck with vista...
I was one of the 1st customer on the day when vista got the go... bought a note-book for my wife. I have not had many issues but should I be worried ? whats the problem with vista ? besides that it is a gigantic piece of software ? its slow as a turtle to open files etc. but all said to be the 512kb memory's fault. If I upgrade to 1Gb it should be all good according to many people. so whats wrong with vista ? should I load xp on that notebook and kill vista ?

Does the emulator work flawlessly with Office? What about software like Adobe's CS3 suite? I'd rather not have to re-invest in software.

It works flawlessly with each and every Windows
application. It was designed to leverage the intel architecture very well. As a matter of fact the windows applications are running faster in Parallels than in some regular Intel native laptops or desktops. Is truly amazing...
But I highly recommend to walk into a Apple store and try all of this yourself. The stuff in the Apple store is very experienced and helpful...

I think this is where I read about how to disable it.
Faisal seems to understand it much better - I'm sure he'll chime in. I just figured out what I could by searching the web. I put "Why is vista so slow?" into Google and there was no shortage of hits. Half had to do with getting the right comm drivers and the other half with this newer IPV6 protocol, which will supposedly be amazing once it's the standard.
Sounds like this new internet protocol is widely still unsupported but Vista tries to communicate using both the new one and the old one, then drops down to the older one when the newer is unsupported, and that slows the internet connection. I probably made several errors in this paragraph, but it's the basic idea, I think.

IPV6 is a really big can of worms. It is designed
to have a better IP address distribution and releive the shortage of IP addresses based on the IPV4 (4 octates of 32 bits). It will greatly speed up the internet once everyone is on the same IPV6 protocol and will bring forth the next generation of Internet with 10 times more security as well as functionality. But The 13 prime DNS servers of the world is not ready for the IPV6 but all the US Federal Govt. environments must finish the IPV6 (or Dual Layer IP) backbone by April 2008.
But that is what it is. What you need to do to disable IPV6 is to go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run. Type in Regedit and hit enter. Click Continue at the security prompt. Once Registry Editor comes up navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > tcpip6 > Parameters. Then on the right hand pane "Right Click" and select New > DWORD (32 bit) Value and name it DisabledComponents (Exactly). Once created it will have a value of 0 (Hex value of 0x00000000). That is good for Disabling Tunnels within IPV6. What I did is double click on the DisabledComponents and set the Decimal value to 255 or Hexadecimal value = 000000ff. That will disable IPv6 over all interfaces and prefer IPv4 to IPv6. You will need a reboot to activate the change.
"Please be very careful while doing changes in the registry".

If you upgrade go for 2gb of ram
1gb is min. recommanded for vista.

well ipv6 is coming, but not yet.
in any case - for now: if you have it enabled and your firewall does not filter ipv6 traffic - your machine IS (NOW) toast for spambots and other [Oops!] 'ploits.
ipv6 is being implemented to provide unique addresses for all devices present and future. a VERY LARGE number of them. this partially has to do with accountability - a unique IP address for every device - no more hiding behind NATted addresses.
