X5 Problem

I was just driving my 2001 X5 and all the instruments and air conditioning went off. They came back on for about 5 seconds and then went off again. Did this several times. Turn signal indicators are not working, but the signals outside and the headlights are. No speedometer, tach, etc.

Any thoughts on what might have caused this?

I have 2001 X-5 3.0. Recently when slowing down from 30 mph to 0 there is a jerk in the downshift. No message lights or Error codes are on display on the dash. I took it to a independent repair shop for diagnositcs and they said "Fault Code 53" and it is a know issues and it might need valve body replacement and that I have to take it to the dealer and it might be $2,000.00

any advise ??
