Handling, braking, balance on par with 3-series?

I absolutely love the new 1-series -- that it's lightweight, small and the 135i will essentially be the sports package with 6-speed manual. But having the 3-series set such a high standard in handling and balance, could the 1-series equal that?

For example, the stopping distance and nose dive characteristic of the E46 was wonderful enough. I haven't driven the E90. How would (does) the E81 compare?

the engineering that runs through all BMWs and the market BMW is aiming at with the 1 series, I'd be surprised if all the things you mention aren't better than the 3. Plus, there will be significantly more power. If BMW decides to market the 1 at a "sportier" driver, it could be a real winner, if they decide to just make it a smaller 3, then it's just that, which ain't bad at all. If only it would come with a LSD.
