Excellent upgrade for the 840's :-)
take your bad nikasil engine and bad transmission and drop this baby into the car....

400HP 6spd manual 6.0l v8 engine out of a GTO. All the GTO was missing is a sexy body. The 8's body would look good with that engine :-)

I ran against a "GOAT" (GTO) to see how 6L V8
does against a 6L V12. The GTO stayed close to me in 0~60 where I stayed in 2nd gear at 60 MPH. From a rolling start 30 to 100 it was no match. My torque just killed it (average 3 car lengths in 3 runs). The biggest gap I had was when we did a 50 to 100 run. The GTO was far. The weight of the GTO is close to my scale weight (GTO published weight = 3787 lbs and my scale weight at the dragstrip with 1/4th tank gas and no spare = 3959.2 lbs).
But then again the GTO cost as much as I probably put in the conversion. LOL. All in all I liked the GTO's abilities.

cool, but the GTO is extremely fast ! with a short
rear end ratio it could have been more trouble. The weight is almost same but the 6.0l V8 is huge on power and torque. was your opponent the 5.7 or 6.0 and auto or manual ? The auto GTO with a 5.7 is a dog. The 4L60E transmission 4spd auto is so outdated it was a shame that Chevy even condidered that with almost 400HP on the car.
anyway a manual GTO with a 6.0l is extremely fast ! Almost as good as a corvette ! Corvette=less weight better rear end gearing and slightly more HP> <a href="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969"><img src="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969" border="0"></a>

And the GTO engine is light too. A guy I know
did an engine swap,..installing the 5.7L version in a Nissan 240. The 5.7 (LS1?) and trans weighed 186 lbs LESS than the iron 4 cylinder engine and trans he removed.
I'd love to find a 94 or 95 840 with a bad engine and do that swap (and non-sunroof roof swap, and biger rear sway). Actually,..why not just do the LS7 ? A local company called Katek does a cam and exhaust for them and gets 675 hp. Kuhmo V710 or similar tires are pretty much mandatory.
675 naturally aspirated hp and a 6 speed manual. I could go for that.
Most of my money I spent on beer and women, the rest I just wasted. :)))

the GTO had lots of potential but the styling and
GM's bad reputation killed it. The newer Australian cars - Grand Prix and others will be much better executed imho.
The 6.0l GTO engine+trans conversion would be purrrfect in the 840. The sunroof delete saves some weight but not much and the thick rear bar can bring balance.
I would also switch the steering gear for a rack&pinion and some updated rear brakes. the rest should be left alone but the BMW badge I would remove. The hearth isn't BMW any more then the badging should be removed. <a href="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969"><img src="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969" border="0"></a>

Perhaps a badge that said "GMW" ? The roof
mod I would want so I could sit upright like modern man. The 2 reasons I sold mine were lack of headroom and lackadasical performance.
The car I had was also too nice to start cutting up.
A 6.0 LS2 with a STS turbo kit,..roof mod,..and bigger sways would make a nice road car. I figure 500 hp is about what the E31 needs to be fun. Light boost from a Vortec or STS turbo kit would be just fine. I see a yellow GTO every week with an STS turbo kit on it,..and a TransAm too. They like them.
Maybe I'll look for a salvage title 840 with a bad motor. Being into the car scene here in Detroit,..I know plenty of guys that work at GM,..the proving grounds,..the performance division, Katek (the guys who did the LS7 in the new ZO6), etc. I'm pretty sure I can get crate engines and trans's at wholesale. GM has the LS7 as a crate engine.
I LOVE your car Lazlo. The hottest E31 I have ever seen. The body kit, wheels and roof are too tasty. If I do the swap,..I might have to be an unimaginative jerk and copy your car. LOL

Guy's this is deja-vu. About 3 years ago
Ed Rather (Mwrench) was working on the LS1 with Viper 6sp tranny for the 8. His original purpose was a conversion for his belove M6. He found so much red tape with CA. that he gave up. To my knowledge he has never sold the conversion to an 8'er. If you live in an area with smog testing you will never get your car passed due the the engine swap. If you make your title a kit car it will be no problem. Then again your car will become almost worthless to most people.

FL and SC has no emission test. I remember
reading about it but I thought it was dropped due to something else... the reason I started thinking about because the GTo engine with 6spd manual is about the same cost as the supercharger setup for the 840. both gives you about 400-450HP but the GTO gives you a 6spd manual on top of all things. I know that the GTO is not a BMW engine but you gotta love those numbers.
If I would sell my 8 and not replace it with an 8, I would either get a E46 M3 or the GTO. I have seen some nice ones with a mild body kit from australia and although very blend and simple style the interior is interesting - silver car with red interior and those seats !!! and the performance figures are great. the best thing about it, it is cheap ! for about the medium E31 -20grand you can get a performance that is CSi level or higher.
The bad thing - at the end of the day it is a GM quality car with their idiot policies. parts will be discontinued unless an independent company picks up the GTO as a market car. Same fate for the SSR ! i have several customers in europe and they are cursing GM. parts are very hard to get, waiting time is 6-8 weeks and the prices ! a bumper cover is 1000usd !!! for a pickup truck !
GM abandoned the SSR after many years of promotion. Dumb idiot managment and they ruin all product that actually makes sense. If I find an SSR for cheap with a 6.0l I will buy that for sure. It is bound to be a classic and what a great one ! I have driven an automatic and even with that transmission the truck was impressive. I drove it for about 500 miles and then shipped it to a lady customer. SHe got a new Harley and the SSR for her 50th birthday !
nice husband I say ! he laid out 70grand at the end for a 50th birthday for his wife ! I wish I could do that to my wife - now ! Not when she is 50 !

The SSR was made by ASC. The company that did
convertibles and sunroofs. I think it's failure bankrupted the company,...well,..at least it is out of business I hear.
Supposed to be a hotrod and weighed 4,760 lbs. LOL.
Definately the GTO engine/trans swap.
With the 6.0 swap AND a $5,000 Squires turbo system,..at 7 psi of boost,...you get 518 hp and 507 tq AT THE WHEELS ! Just about right.
Most of my money I spent on beer and women, the rest I just wasted. :)))

don't write the SSR off with the weight ! That
truck was a HOT rod if not in a conventional way. The convertible hardtop, the bed cover, the huge wheels and full leather interior all made it heavy. But I was impressed ! It was done right in an american kind of way - the bigger the better. I drove the truck in SFLA and it was perfect. I could burn the tires and enjoy sunshine and still be a rodeo king with my pickup :-) and with my funny accent :-) Hahaha
but seriously the truck was good styling. It could have been offered in a non-convertible version with a smaller simple V8 and less blings for under 30 grand and it would have sold in large numbers. The attraction for me was the styling the V8 power and the combined practicality with huge style.
My old time favorite is a GM Panel van with a v8 converted to my business truck ! I could use a little style and have fun on those fridays when I actually drive my work van.
1 day out of 5 but on that day I want style and power ! Whats better then a Panel Van ? <a href="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969"><img src="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969" border="0"></a>

It was a 6.0L (A Friend's car). And he had a
Tremec 6 Speed Manual Gearbox with a Short Shifter. Not sure what kind of Rear end he had.
A Quick Comparo:
GTO
3787 lbs
400 HP
400 ft-lbs Torque
9.4675 lbs/HP
9.4675 lbs/lbs-ft
860
3959.2 lbs
455 HP
504.7 ft-lbs Torque
8.7015 lbs/HP
7.845 lbs/lbs-ft
Huge on Torque and power????? Yes, but not enough for a 860 of any flavor. Also to note that I have a 3.15 rear with a higher lockup and a UUC Evo Short Shifter.

You friend must have a 2005 or newer.
GM tried to save the dying program in 2005 by replacing the 300 hp engine with a 390 hp LS2. In '06 they tweaked it to 395 hp for the auto and 400 hp for the Tremec 5 speed manual.
0-60 went from a dismal 7.7 sec to a healthy 5.5 sec.
1/4 mile times went from a lousy 16.0 sec (as tested by Car & Driver) (no faster than a 1996 Chevy Cavalier LS) to a rather nice 14.1 (as tested by Car & Driver).
I bet if they had found a way to trim 500 lbs off that truck and had installed the LS2 from the get-go,...they would have sold really well,...in spite of the as-tested 13-14 average mpg.
Most of my money I spent on beer and women, the rest I just wasted. :)))

YES ! we had a 6.0l 395HP with an auto !
Silver with black leather and 20" chrome wheels all the bells and whistles ! I loved it !
no it was not corvette fast nor was it even M5 fast or anything like that nature. It was just a good looking pickup with a large v8 and a auto tranny so even wife could drive it.
the price was just way to high though ! I always felt that 50gradn should buy you a damn good car/truck <a href="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969"><img src="http://mydrive.roadfly.com/photos/pic.php?u=56726KDZYN&i=8969" border="0"></a>
