Active Steering vs Variable Assist
My MINI has variable assist power steering, and I love it! However, the 1 Series gets the option for Active Steering, but I'm not convinced I want that. So, what I'm wondering now is if you decide not to opt for the Active Steering, is the default EPS system variable or constant rate assist?

I don't think I would say most want it ....
because it is a big bucks option that many do not understand its benefits.
Just try to test drive one if you can find it. If you live out in the country, then active steering "might" not be a great option.
But if you live in the burbs it's very nice.
If you ever drive in a city, it is a MUST. It is just one of those things you cannot explain. I find the steering to be work in my M5 as compared to our 335i w/active steering. Try parking with it...GREAT.
Try it out. And don't forget, it also links with Dynamic Stability Control for enhanced safety. Active steering also corrects for crosswinds and tramlining at higher speeds. Cool stuff.
