    VIN Help

Hello fellow 2002 fans. Bought a 1973 2002 rolling body for 200 bucks, just because the body is in excellent shape. Problem is that the stamped vin does not match the one in title. I figured it was not too big of a gamble, for 200 bucks. Car's VIN is 2587056, titles' is K18302029 (Michigan title.) Has anyone ever seen a VIN as such? Discription in title does match the car. Thank you for any help you might be able throw my way. Marcelo

    Re: VIN Help

Hi Marcelo, Are you sure you are reading it right?
Mich. title will have: from left to right, top to bottom:

1st line: VIN, YR, Make, Model, Body Style.

2nd line: Title #, Issue date, Odometer, Brand/Legend.

    3rd line: Weight/Category, Odometer brand,

4th line: Owners name & address.

The vin in line 1 should match the vin on the car.
The Title# in line 2 will be totally different and could include numbers and letters. You may have an older title that is not in the same order as shown BUT, the vin# and the title# will always be different. Hope this helps you.

    Re: VIN Help

Joel, Thank you for the reply. I will take a harder look at the title tonight.
I just realized that according to the VIN stamped on the car (2587056), wouldn't this be a 1972, instead of a 1973, as stated on the title?
This keeps getting scarier. Will see I can make any sense of it. Thanks again.

    Re: VIN Help

Marcello...No fear...The car mayhave been titled in the year it was sold and not the year of manufacture. Many states used to do this.

    Re: VIN Help

lyonsfin, that is a relief, thank you.
Cheked the title and it does say K18302029 under VIN. Just as joel stated it, the title number is completely different 175P0090814 F.
Thank you again for your input, I will keep working towards getting the car legal. I already have a good motor and tranny, nice set of Recaro seats, new carpet, nice set of BBS rims with new rubber and a few other knick knacks.....can't slack off now. Thanks again fellows!

Re: VIN 2587056 is an 05/88 Euro 318i. Some problem.

Roy, you are correct only if you apply this number to "modern" beemers. "2587056" are the last seven digits of an 05/88 Euro 318i's VIN.
"2587056" is the complete VIN for a 1972 BMW 2002, per the 2002 Registry.
Can anyone back me up.......please? Thank you for the reply Roy.

That is strange because my 75 and 76 cars

only have 7 digit numbers and they show up correctly in the VIN search. Did BMW reuse some early car VINs on later models? If so when did they start this. I looked on the official BMWgroup factory site for yours and mine.

VINs are 7 digits for early cars and 17 digits for

    later cars.

    Re: Nope.

My BMW motorcycles all have VINs that start with letters (WB) but they (VINs) are 17 characters long.
