This is why I had a 1990 range rover

when i first turned 16. It was solid, tank like, and just as fast. My condolences. Ive been here before and luckily "I" managed to walk away. I lost my first 8 prob doing the same speed this kid was but It was decided that it wasnt my time.<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m100/vmystikilv/tBALLLIN-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Can our car crash at 8kph, no damage?

I think that 8kph is the Canadian standard for no damage front or rear. I don't want to test it.

Even the track is not completely safe as there was that Porsche supercar, I forget the model, that crashed at a track event when a Ferrari was allowed onto the track at the wrong time.

Somebody on the NSX board reported the 5 kids crashed in an E31. They also reported those kids had 20+ tickets between them.

    Um Bob

The E31 IS a heavy underpowered automobile. And it will protect your kid waaaaay better than a 70's tank as it has a relatively modern crash structure, brakes that don't take until the next county to stop, way better handling to avoid accidents, ABS, ASC, passive rear wheel steering to help keep the tail from wagging, and airbags. Can't hardly say that about a '72 Cheby Station Wagon (although the disappearing tailgate was cool).

My son took his driver's skill training in my 850.

His first car? A 1990 Acura Legend. Heavy (surprisingly heavy), slow, Airbag, ABS, good crash ratings, and cheap enough to dispense with collision insurance. Way better than a 70's barge. He still has it although it has battle damage from misjudgements.

Was he still irresponsible after his driver's skill training - oh yeah. Just ask him how well my Miata drove after he took it for a "spin". I had bad feelings about it as I drove away and tried calling him on his cell phone. Being a safe driver he didn't answer it while driving. This same "safe driver" shortly thereafter tried to take a 25 mph corner at around 75 mph and learned what is meant by trailing throttle oversteer. He was actually a safer driver in the beginning but became overconfident and has also had several incidents due to lack of situational awareness. I've considered nicknaming him Crash. Any car can be deadly; some just get deadlier faster than others.

As far as the accident with the kids and the M5 - it is tragic for all involved - the kids, their families, & the crew that responded to that scene.

    Dave

our cars are nowhere near as dangerous as M5

when I sit in my car after driving the M5/M6 I felt like sitting in a '90 Ford Tempo.

way faster and quicker. By the time you reach the same speed the runway ends. Also things happen very fast in the M5 due to the SMG transmission. an automatic reacts so slow, you time to think.

M5/M6 is more of a race car then a street car. not for 21 and under unless you have a training like a race car driver at that age.

At 150mph its all pliable metal. thats all i mean

I sure he didn't wreck because the trans shifted to quick. He wrecked from doing an easily attainable high speed. Our cars do get to those 120 and up speeds fairly quickly.<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m100/vmystikilv/tBALLLIN-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Sorry, but I don't see the connection between

"the driver was an idiot" and me pointing out that this is lounge material. With all due respect Nestor, I have been reading post here for about 5 years now and a pattern seems to be emerging that really gives me a chuckle. It seems that there are individuals here that are real good in getting others all worked up with their comments (like the one you made here - although I am not worked up about it). The intersting thing is that the ongoing problems with folks not getting along with one another on this board is directly proportional to the little red number by your screenname. It seems the higher the number, the lower the tolerance (with few exceptions - Mark in SBA seems to have understood my post here and seems fine with it). I am real curious as to your reasoning in posting "YOUR ADVICE STINKS". I agree with you in that this kid was a total idiot, and his parents even more so for allowing him access to this car, but that is not what we are talking about. Re-read your post and see if it was actually something that you really wanted to say here. I wasn't giving "advice" I was stating a fact that all the established memebers on this board seem to pound into everyone's head (through the M.O.M) that non-technical stuff belongs in the lounge, hence my comment of: "what's good for the goose, 'aint good for the gander". I am sure you can see the point there...

Have a nice day and don't take life our your little red number too serious.

    Re: He probably right, Jim

Pretty balmy this year Mark. With global warming (thank God!), we haven't hit 10 degrees (that's Farenheit of course) yet this year. But, the upper teens and low twenties feel like it with a 50 mile per hour wind. (Actually the winds hit 55 mph the other day). Oklahoma weather is extreme. It was 65 degrees a few days ago, and then 20 degrees by the middle of the night...

Oh, and I just kinda think anything to do with driver safety and anything reinforcing it is always on topic. But, either the main page or the lounge works. I just tend to check the lounge much less often.

Re: Sorry, but I don't see the connection between

Probably the reason the people with the little red numbers next to their names, especially the higher numbers, have less tolerance is that they've seen so many people come and go over the years that were less than helpful, and always quick to inflict their faulty logic upon the masses when they got upset. (Of course *I'm* not guilty of that, LOL!)

    I agree exactly...

The step daughter got a very nice late 70's chevy station wagon to learn in. She hated driving it because of peer pressure but she did survive to make it to college. Her mother bought her an integra while in College and it took her about two months to crash it and total it! SO driving experience is something that CANNOT be taught!!!

The end of the runway is only a stone's throw from Travolta's new place where he stores his 707. And the terminal velocity of an M5 after accelerating through a 1.3 mile runway is?

    New info

The investigation estimated speed of minimum 120 mph:

    http://www.ocala.com/article/20080205/NEWS/802050347/1368/googlesitemapnews

Looks like the jury is still out on whether the (underage) kids had been drinking. If so, big trouble for the owners of the 'house party' they they were at before hand.
