How many of you have had broken rear springs?

Are these things defective, was there a recall? I have BOTH!! rear springs broken, where the bottom coil is completely separated from the rest of the spring. I could see one break by chance, but both indicates a problem. I'm not too happy right now. At first I thought I just had one so today I swapped that one, and noticed the other one is broken too, but the bottom coil is completely gone hence why I did not see that it was broken in the first place. So till I get another spring I have one defective and one brand new, and my car sits 1/2" lower on the broken side. I also noticed my shocks are rather soft, I had no problem pushing them in with one hand. I'm not sure how firm they were when brand new, but when I had KYB AGX's on my Nissan I needed to put a lot of weight on it to compress, certainly not with one hand. I would assume that riding a 1/2" lower than stock on these shocks really wore them down quickly. My '04 has 35,000 miles now and judging by the look of the springs they must have split a few years ago.

I would suggest you guys check your rear springs!

car, and I'm only 170lbs. Not sure what's causing this, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the post.

    Mine does as well.

I think it's because the parking brake is engaged. I suppose an experiment would be easy enough, but I'm too lazy to get to it.

    Re: Mine does as well.

I just had my car in because I was getting a loud clunk when I came up my driveway or other mildly steep angles while I was turning right. The first time they replaced the right rear shock and the strut mount as well. This didn't fix it. After looking at it more, they decided that the rubber pad below the spring and the suspension was slipping and making the noise. They service papers say that they cleaned off the mounts and put talcum powder to the base of the coil spring... I've only had the car back a day but the clunk seems to be gone, at least until the talcum powder washes away in the next rain!! My car squeeks when I get out as well. 02 M3SMG

Re: How many of you have had broken rear springs?

Had an Oil Service visit to the stealership yesterday. Advisor tells me BOTH my rear springs are broken. 2002, street driven only, all stock, 78000 miles.

I'll be having a look at it this weekend. Taking it to an independent shop to have them replaced on Tuesday.

120K on my '01 330xi, RR spring broken near bottom.

And it's a real pisser, because you gotta go OEM because you can't (well, you probably could but I already scrape bottom on rutted snowed-in roads) replace them with Eibach or other lowered springs, and no-one sells OEM -xi springs. Gotta go to the stealer.

Re: How many of you have had broken rear springs?

I was fortunate in that I was able to go to an independent shop that does a LOT of GC Coilover installs. He had a mildly used set from an equivalent year M3, sitting around... I was able to get him to put them in for a bargain price... basically just labour. Saved me a ton of $$$$.

    BOTH!!!!!!!!!

Turns out BOTH rear coils were broken - the left just with a crack in it.

Funny addendum; the tech (mistakenly) replaced the left first, then the service manager realized that they had earlier (two weeks ago) noted that it was the right that was broken. Evidently the springs are only sold in pairs, so they had the replacement for the other.
