Bilstein structs to be gutted for Koni inserts?

I know Koni inserts require O.E strut housings, but does anyone gutted Bilstein struts to be used with Konis?

I threw away my O.E struts when I went with Bilsteins.

I think they should do the job, but just wanted to confirm if there are any problems...

    Thanks,-- SSY

You can probably buy some blown stock struts

Used to be plenty of M3 owners selling off they're old M3 shocks and struts to other E36 owner who are swapping M3 suspensions. I did it on my 325i in 2002. They are usually blown, and ultimately worthless to the people who buy them, but you just want the housing anyway. I bought what turned out to be a worthless set, then got a good deal on some 1K mile shocks and resold the crap, keeping the good ones.

Bilsteins are monotube, so I'd say no.

Stock Sachs/Boge front struts are twin-tube. This inner/outer tube setup is what (I believe) allows you to gut the stock inner shock tube from the outer assembly. Since Bilsteins are a single tube construction, I think gutting them to put koni inserts won't be an option.

I have done a Koni cut and gut...

Stock struts are not twin tube...you just cut and gut the singular tube and slide in the replacement strut. I would recommend you find a blown pair of M3 struts and start from there. Unless you know the precise inside diameter of the Billys, there is no way of telling whether the Koni inserts will slide into the Billy strut. All that said, I think you will be pleased with the Koni inserts. Best Regards, Mike

Re: I have done a Koni cut and gut...

Got it! I will attempt the work first on Bilstein. If things go wrong, I will look for some blown OE struts and go from there. Looking at the Bilstein struts, they look very doable!

    Thanks,-- SSY
