    Is the dashboard leather? I read somewhere ....

    it is plastic since leather won't last in that area due to direct sun exposure.

    Yes...

    Full leather (in this case) in fact does mean leather dashboard as well. Some on this board may go to great lengths to tell you that BMW used "synthetic" or some type of manufactured hyde, but yours may in fact be leather. I actually replaced a dash pad that had a premature cracking problem and have seen behind the dash.....it is genuine leather....(let the attacks begin!)....BTW, I have owned 3 M5's (all new)an E28, E34, and an E39--- only the E34 dash was not leather, but vinyl....These leather hydes will take alot of sun if you keep the leather clean and lubricated with a quality leather treatment. Water(moisture is actually harder on the lifespan) from air vapor and persperation is actually harder on the hydes....
