long term effects of 87 octane gas

hey all i was wondering what kind of damage running 87 oct gas will do to the longevity of the engine. will the computer sense it and just retard the ignition with no lasting effects other than slight power loss? thanks for any help.
gas is 4.20 here and was thinking to run lower octane for a month or so
