Re: Looking to purchase 01-03 M5 as a daily driver.

As an owner for 6 months now of a 72k ( kilometres here ) Aug 1999 build I am in love !Seriously quick car regarded as the best "5" series made ( the E39). Very reliable. Stops like nothing else. Only gripe is I've gotten lazy in my old age and 6 speed is a bit of a pain in city traffic. I live in The Outback here so it is 3 minutes out of the city to open road. Has been totally reliable so far and very comfortable ( mines got the Heritage trim comfort pack ......Oxford green outside and Oxford green leather with black suede roof lining ) Good E39 M5 hunting. Can you get Steptronic in the USA ?

Bear in mind that this a race car with 4 doors...

maintenance costs will be higher (price the BMW 10W60 oil), and when a unique part breaks, or wears out, the price will be 2-3X the 540 price.

    Not even.

If you grenade the engine, yeah, you'll be in trouble, but the rest of the parts are just as overpriced in a 540 :-)<img src="http://members.roadfly.org/pmiranda/TMCM_anim.gif">

    I say go for it!!!!

I'm in the same boat. I would like to buy an 01-03, but from the research I've done so far it is quite true that you pay a premium for parts. When you look at what you can buy for very little money I can deal with the higher price of parts.
I own an E39 528 and love the car but I can only imagine what an M5 performs like---I can hardly wait!!
    Good luck!!
