How is the 1 series trunk space?

Can it hold two sets of clubs?

    I don't think so

The trunk/car is not wide enough. Maybe with the back seat folded down you can put them straight in side by side.

Yes, it will fit 2 sets of clubs - but they will need to be midsized bags (or smaller). We've gone golfing several times in my Cabrio with the top down, so I know it can be done.
The 1er Cabrio trunk is about the same size as that of my old Z4..

It actually seems a good bit larger, Visser. With the top compartment raised, I can get a 6 octave keyboard + a small amp in my 128i Cv trunk, but there was not enough room or clearance in the Z4 for the even the amp, much less the keyboard. And the coupe's trunk is larger still.

You're probably correct as it relates to total volume.
But the rear area where one places golf bags is about the same, so the 2 golf bags which fit tightly in my Z4, fit just as tightly in my 1er Cab..

So side to side distance is fine....

The issue is front to back or height?
