Hey JTP, about our friend Brett.
I know you're aware that even though I admired the guy, I'm on record more than once for opinioning that he could be a real drama queen. I respected the guy in terms of his talent and effort, but there were times that made me wonder about a few things.
Now it seems it's gotten to the point others are taking notice too. And not just the blogger, if you read some of the comments you'll notice it's sprinkled with Packerheads.
Are others tiring of the drama?
Kinda sounds like some people are just getting real tired of it.
Your thoughts? Is this being discussed to any degree on your local sports radio/TV shows up there, or are just a few people trying to make more out of it than there really is?

My thought? For most part not Brett's fault
Over the years there has been WAY TOO MUCH attention paid to whether he was coming back or not. But it wasn't him writing those stories and broadcasting those reports. The media got ahold of it and it went bonkers year in and year out. Sure, he could have made his decisions a little faster, but still it wasn't him that was writing a story every day about what he was going to do. The media just blew it up beyond rationality. And they are doing it now again. Everything Favre is saying publicly is that he is retired and it's all just rumor, yet we have story upon story about whether he's coming back. That's not his fault. The only people I hear saying anything about him coming back are 1) His brother (hey, bro, SHUT THE HELL UP!) and 2) Al Harris (hey, teammate, SHUT THE HELL UP!). Otherwise, Brett and his agent are saying it's rumor.
It's a bunch of speculation at this point. I would love to have him back for one more year. All along I said I wanted him to announce that he was coming back for one more year so that he could have a "Going Away Tour" and get the send off that he has earned. That being said, the decision has to be made PRONTO if it's going to happen so that the team can get ready for it and Aaron Rodgers doesn't have the carpet pulled out from underneath him even more than it would at this point.

"That being said, the decision has to be made PRONTO if it's going to happen....."
As far as any decision being made, Favre made that decision when he did the big emotional farewell bit. After the tears and all, he'd look like a major buffoon if he were to come back now saying he's reconsidered things. He had several years to think this out, it's not like it was spontaneous or some sort of knee jerk reaction to not making it to Super Bowl. You can't give some teary eyed going away speech and then turn around a few months later and say you've rethought things.
IMHO, he made the right decision and now it's time for him to move on to the next chapter in his life with his dignity still intact. For him to even approach management about another chance would make him fodder for a lot of shots by the likes of fans, sportswriters, and Conan O'brien/Jay Leno's. Even though I wasn't a huge follower of his, I don't want to see him go down like that.

It’s Difficult Decision to go to pasture.
It was hard for me at 53 years old; I can’t imagine what it is like for someone Farve’s age. I didn’t want to retire, because I was enjoying public safety work, but I knew if I stayed it wasn’t going to be good for my health and that might have a negative impact on someone else’s safety. Emotionally, I still wish I was there, but I made the right decision even though it took some time.
I can see how that directly applies to Farve’s situation. Like it or not, football is a business and what is best for the team will prevail. The way I see it, Farve has largely been loyal to Green Bay and Green Bay has reciprocated. (I’ll bet there is some dirt I’m not aware of, but…) That is the way I hope the Green Bay fans let this chapter come to close.
The emotional difficulties aside, it will work out. It is best for those not directly impacted to be patient. That’s just fair. I’ll give the pundants their due… I’ll laugh at the joke and realize their opinion doesn’t really mean much. From where I sit, Green Bay and Brett Farve have been a lucky relationship!
Just my not so humble opinion based on experience.

As with so many things you read on the Internet,
this is becoming a little hard to know what to believe. I recognize the name of this Peter King guy, but I don't know how accountable or not he is.
"Here’s the dilemma: According to a report Monday by my friend and former SI homie Peter King, Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, will send a letter in the next 9 days stating that the 38-year-old quarterbacking legend wants to be taken off the NFL’s reserve/retired list. This will force the Packers to welcome Favre back to the team four months after they thought he’d bowed out gracefully, or to trade or release him – three options that Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly find distasteful."
This doesn't mention his brother or Al Harris. It also mentions the possibility of him going to another team.
Understand, I'm not trying to beat down Favre. I really do/did admire him as a player and a person. I just don't like the way this sounds like it's playing out. The guy had an incredible career and went out with class. I'd just feel more comfortable if that was the last chapter in all this.

Great read, looking at all side of the issue.
The analogy to the 49ers was very appropriate. Yes from a Northern California perspective, Montana is a very revered player and I must admit, I was a Steve Young doubter that was very happily proven wrong. I had a couple of co-workers that kept insisting that Steve Young was a spectacular athlete. We were glad he stayed through it all.
I hope it works out as well for Green Bay.

I think it might be time that we accept part of
the mess does in fact rest with Favre.
This is becoming a bad soap opera fast. Even though I used the term "drama" to describe someone a time or two, I would have never wanted to see it all turn out like this.
This is embarassing. I feel for the fans, but to be honest I feel more for the coach and management. They're in a no win situation.

Doesn’t That Come with the Territory?
Difficult decisions and no win situations are an everyday part of management leadership. That’s why they get the big bucks. Whether or not I like the decision made by the coaches and management, the only way they’ll deserve sympathy is if they do something!
They just need to do what they believe is in the best interest of a winning team and move forward.
The pundants will criticize the decision anyway.
Ok, ask me what I think of the Yorks.

Unfortunately, you are right
If you had told me a year ago that someone, anyone, could tarnish Brett Favre's reputation in Green Bay, I would have told you you were smoking some bad weed. Short of actually being caught molesting a child, he had general impugnity.
And then he pulled this. I don't blame him for having second thoughts. I do blame him for not pulling the trigger on those second thoughts when something could have been done about it (back in May when Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy flew to Mississippi to talk to him about these rumors they were hearing -- and he DENIED any interest). And I most definitely blame him for now trying to retroactivly trying to inject himself back into the mix after 1) The Packers used two picks in the draft on QBs, and 2) The Packers spent all of minicamp and the OTA's revamping the offense for a younger, more mobile QB. For him to try to come back now is a) too late, b) unreasonable, and c) selfish.
What REALLY pisses me off is that I have tickets for opening night on Monday Night Football - when they were SUPPOSED to be retiring his jersey. Call me crazy, but I just DON'T see that happening anymore regardless of how this stupid situation works itself out.

Re: Unfortunately, you are right
I saw the interview with the reporter he did where he was trying to explain all this, and I really couldn't find fault in what he said, and he seemed to go out of his way to try and convince everyone that he cares about the city, the team, the players, the fans and the admin. He chose his words, and what points he wanted to touch on wisely.
Unfortunately, he tiptoed around the controversial point, such as what I hear is his threat to show up at training camp. That would be an extremely bad move.
This is going to be a real shame if he ruins or taints the legacy thing. I'm crossing my fingers this comes to a good conclusion for all involved.
