mileage with M5?
Hello all!
I have a '97 540i/6 that I drive on a daily basis with over 218K miles on her right now. I get a combined 21 MPG with a max of about 28MPG on the highway alone.
I'm thinking about also getting an E34 M5 to "supplement" my garage. I'd also like to drive her alot as I do my E39. Question is, what kind of mileage am I looking at when driven "normally"? I'd like to see your personal mileage figures and driving styles.
Thanks!
Gene

Re: mileage with M5?
I get about 12.5L/100Km (about 19mpg) for average driving. Combined highway, city with a fair amount of foot-to-the-floor red-line acceleration. With really hard driving - that can drop to the 14-15 range (~16MPG)
I can get this down to about 10L/100Km (23.5MPG) if I drive the speed limit.
These are OBC reported numbers mind you and I have no idea if my OBC is properly calibrated.

I also get better than 18 MPG city & highway
OBD average speed 35-40 MPH.
On a road trip I usually get 23-24 MPG, an OBD average @ 85-90 MPH.
My E38, 740 (4.4 liter) gets 20+ MPG with an OBD speed average 85-90 MPH.
The highway gas mileage for both would be better if I didn't have to keep slowing down to get arround the fast lane hogs and accelerating back to speed.Rod...

Mine is chipped and my average mileage is 20.5 mpg over the last 7 years / 30,000+ miles. I got 18.7 mpg on my last tank which included an autocross day. I think the worst I've ever done on a tank is in the 18s. The worst I've ever seen was 11 mpg after a fill-up then going, well, lets just say very fast, up an interstate mountain pass between about 8500 ft and 10500 ft in elevation. But that was only over 7 or 8 miles. I was back in the 20's after going down the other side. Best was between 26 and 27 mpg on interstate / cruise control. I did 25.6 mpg once through the Colorado mountains under very spirited driving conditions, but typically that trip gets me 22 to 23 mpg. I don't spend much time in city / stop and go conditions though. I have another vehicle for that.
