Anyone else trying to activate an iPhone?

Got my new iPhone this morning, but they couldn't activate it because the iTunes Store is crashed. So now I sit here with my old Razr deactivated, but the new iPhone not yet activated. Yeah, THIS is fun!

    Anyone else sharing the pain?

Yup. Having problems updating my old one

Trying to put 2.0 software on my old one, and first needed to search around for the latest itunes software as the apple site was unaccessible. Finally found and installed itunes ver 7.7 and it bricked my iphone.

Now, just a few minutes ago, the iphone came up and the original software was restored from backup. Now a sync is in progress and it is on 85 out of 1686 files, so it should take the better part of 30 minutes or so, and I still don't have version 2.0 software installed. All I have is my phone back to working as of yesterday. However, I know the phone works again as I just received a text message from ATT reminding me that the new iphone is now available and to come on down. HOORAY!

    Nope! I know better!

It can be painful to be an "Early Adopter" of new technology. Apple did a software update and tried to roll out the new phone around the same time which might have overloaded their system.

A friend's son was in line at 5:15 this morning to be one of the first to get one. I like my Razr!

That's what really doesn't make sense

I can't blame AT&T or Apple for the fact that their servers aren't able to handle millions of hits at once. It wouldn't make any sense to scale your hardware that high when it is only needed once a year or so.

What DOESN'T make sense, though, is that they rolled out software 2.0 for first gen iPhones on the same day as the release of iPhone 2.0. Which meant that BOTH first gen iPhone users AND iPhone 2.0 users were ALL vying for resources at the same time! Makes no sense whatsoever. Either give the first gen folks a week headstart, or don't release the new software for them until a week later. Either way, stagger it so that there wasn't a mad dash from every iPhone user on the planet all in one morning.

I finally got mine activated about 3:30 yesterday, but I had several calls from people wondering why my phone number was giving them a wierd message yesterday, including a somewhat frantic call from a client who was overreacting to something innocuous but then couldn't get through to me so that I could explain everything to her and reassure her that the sky was, in fact, not falling! All is well now, but I was certainly not a big Steve Jobs fan for about 6 hours yesterday!

Mine is back to being a brick

It tried to update again yesterday and bricked itself again. I have an appointment at 4:45 today with the genius after talking with and being on hold with Apple support this morning for > 1 hour. He and I were both leaning to bringing it in.

    Kathy, still without a phone.

Battery on new iPhone lasts 3 hours!

when using the new 3G internet service. Oh and you can't open the phone and replace it with a long life battery like the one in my Razr.

I don't hate Apple products (I own 3 iPods) but they have limitations and sometimes it takes them a few tries to get it right.

    Says who?

Apple says here that it lasts "up to 5 hours" on 3G usage (either internet or voice).

For those that say 5 hours isn't enough, a) what are you downloading on your phone!? It's a phone, not a surrogate laptop. b) you get 6 hours of life if you can connect via wi-fi, so find yourself a hot spot if you are concerned.

I played around on mine of and on all day yesterday. I was connected via my home wi-fi network. Load times were very fast and I still had 2/3 to 3/4 of my battery charge when I plugged it in last night. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

I will agree that having a sealed battery is annoying. But you CAN buy piggyback extended-life batteries that will increase your usage if you really need it.

    You actually LIKE your Razr...

...Me and the SO both had razrs, we hated them intensely. I always thought Motorola made good products, until I got the razr, wadda piece of crap. Couldn't hear who I was talking to, and had to talk loud to get the caller to hear me, unless they had a razr as well, at which point we would have to scream at each other. I'm gonna use ours in a Dadaist sculpture one day. The SO has an iPhone, and I have a Trio 750. I've never had good luck with palm products, but I have to admit that my 750 hasn't given me any problems.

I liked my Razr for what it was

When I got it, it was a significant step up from what I had. Bigger screen but smaller overall package. It did it's job and it did it pretty well. A few bugs along the way (occasionally, phone numbers would just disappear from my address book, even though there were still there if I showed "all contacts" instead of "primary contacts." Never figured that out, but it wasn't THAT big of a deal. Overall, it was a nice phone. But it was just a phone. Internet was interminably slow and very limited in content. I could get a game score here or there, but that was about it.

So far, the iPhone is a quantum leap. But it's not a fair comparison because the iPhone is not just a phone and the Razr was not intended to be a Smart Phone.

A coworker who was in line at 5:15am to get one.

I know he might be the exception rather than the rule and it is not a scientific study. He was just very disappointed when it died on him.

    Was his battery fully charged?

The 3g technology certainly does draw more juice, that's why Apple didn't include that chipset in the original iPhone. But 3 hours is pretty quick, and not at all indicative of the times that I have gotten over the past couple of days.

I guess I would just be a bit more careful about throwing out a claim like this when it is based on incomplete information about one user out of millions. If we start hearing more and more people with those results, then maybe Apple was stretching it a bit (like car companies used to do with mph ratings) but otherwise, it may just be a less-than-fully charged battery or an anomoly of some other origin.

I agree, I like my Razr for what it is...a phone.

I know it must seem a bit strange that I am a techie that doesn't want a phone with all of the neat stuff that the iPhone or Smart Phones have to offer (hey I'm not a big Star Trek fan either).

I'm not against these devices. Some people need them for business and others like them to stay in touch. Most of the things that I need to do for work require more ability than a Smart Phone is capable of so I need to use my laptop for these things. I have a cell modem for my laptop so I can work remotely (and yes there are areas where it will not work although I haven't had this happen yet).

My Razr hold a charge for about a week at a time (I do have an extended life battery). If I use it for more than 2 calls per day that is a lot (except when I'm travelling). My servers E-Mail brief error messages to my phone so I am aware of problems. Right now this is all I need.

As far as I know it was....

Maybe the 3G service in NYC requires more juice. It is also possible that he was in an area where it was using more power trying to get a signal (as the digital phones do in analog areas).

All I need is this ashtray....

And that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one - I need this. The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair. I guess it's a good thing that I don't live in an area where such nonsense, eyephone, is even supported. Makes life easier....
