    Oil consumption?

I am currently looking at several used 2007 M5s - One with 6-sp manual - the rest have SMG. I am concerned about reviews from owners that their M5 consumed excessive amounts of oil early.

I had a 2000 540i 6 speed and never added oil between changes - I had been told that there would be some consumption but I never experienced it. I have a 2004 X5 3.0 6 speed and add about 1 quart every 3000 - 4000 miles - supposed to be normal consumpton for that engine which now has 40,000 miles on it.

I have read multiple negative comments about the M5 re: MPG, SMG, etc. But I know that if I had paid full attention to negative reviews I would have never bought the 540i or the X5 and I love both.

I assume most owners love the car - any thoughts on the oil issue? I am asking because now is a good time to buy used - 07's are available at 40% or more off original MSRP.

    Thanks

    Define excessive

The S85 is pretty much a race engine toned down for everyday street life. The harder you run it the more oil it will consume. It is the nature of the beast. Be worried if it wants a quart every 700 miles or blows grey smoke all of the time. BTW: It is also likes gas. A lot. Tires too. You've got to drive it.
