    Air Flow Sensor or MAF? M5 stroker

    So its time to replace or update the air flow sensor in my M5. I am wondering with my car what the best option will be. I have a S38 stroker and I need some advice on the best route to take. I have looked at the Miller Performance (http://www.millerperformancecars.com) MAF and the Split Second Kits (http://www.splitsec.com/mafkits/MAFkits.htm) and from what I can see it looks like the Split Second kits offer more fine tuning capabilities, manually or via laptop. Any input is greatly appreciated!

    I am also trying to to determine what the costs involved will be and if it something I should just hand off to my mechanic to handle.

    I can tell you that the Split Second unit is the way to go, be it the
    knob version or the laptop version. I installed one in an euro M6 and
    the response greatly improved (from first gear to fifth). I did a comparison before and after with a GTech unit with a 40-45hp improvement. My euro M6 had the heads ported for a 5% improvement, no cats (euros don't have) and Supersprint exhaust. I can tell you that I could stand my ground with E46 M3's at high speed. Just remember these cars at least euros tend to run rich and burn fuel very fast. But for the joy I don't care much for that. I am now installing a Split Second unit to a US version (M6 1988).     What ever you decide, get it dyno tuned.

    Not sure where you are, but a reputable shop should be able to dyno tune your MAF. That way you can dial in the specific profile you want (low end torque, high end power, fuel consumption...). If you are on the east coast I highly recommend Mario at Vintage Sports Racing. He's done this many, many times with all the classics (e28/e34 M5's, E30 M3's, M6's...).
