How do I know if I need new struts/shocks?

I have a 03 M5 with about 78k miles on it. I have the extended warranty and service agreement that expires soon. I wanted to get some suspension parts replaced before it expires. The car feels a little loose and body sway. How does the dealer check if things need to be replaced?

Generally if shocks or struts are gone they will begin to leak a little.
Take a look up where the rod goes into the body---if you see any dampness usually accompanied by dust, sand or dirt sticking to it, it is a good indication that it's time to replace them.
You may have other suspension problems though. I would have it checked over closely before your warranty runs out.
