    bmw 325 E46 starter problem

    My BMW wouldn’t start this morning – it is a 2002 E46 325 Touring.

When you put key in ----the starter does not crank. The lights seem bright enough.

When you actually turn the key to start -- the lights come on --- even though the switch is OFF---- and you hear a loud click at same time --- sounds like a relay or solenoid like the starter – then lights go out and you get nothing – if you try to move key to start position again you get nothing – if you turn key totally off – then to start again --- you get some thing again.

Put jumper from battery of another car --- everything seems stronger –but exact same thing.

There is a similar post to this, back in 2002, so is this a common fault ? is it the starter motor or battery ??

    looking for any help please

More likely the key switch itself

the 'click' sound is definitely under bonnet, probably at the starter

How old is your battery? ....and ................

....that battery WILL give up with no warning -
and you cannot 'jump' another battery through
a 'shorted' bad battery. Put your jumper battery
in this car to prove the point - and if it cranks,
    "Bob's yer Uncle !"

If you have a volt meter and can measure voltage
at the jumper point under the hood, on the right side
of the firewall - while your holding the key in the crank
position - and your less than 10 volts? - you have a bad battery.

Re: bmw 325 E46 starter problem

Thanks to all for your help. The problem on starting was the battery. However, the reason for a flat battery was due to failure of the final stage unit on the heater. This caused the heater fan to come on overnight and flatten the battery !
