You need new trunk lifters. Easy and cheap DIY.

My trunk stays up fine, but it leads me to ask something that I have wondered about ever since I bought my '96 740iL. Is it natural for the trunk to be so heavy to lift? I push the button and it electronically pops up about an inch, but you have to lift it from there. It's heavy enough that it is difficult for my wife to raise. Is that normal?

    Probably not normal...

If your trunk lifters are original, you might consider replacing them. They only last about 5 years.
