Thread: Oil change

Funny, had almost the same fluid story!
We both got the same runaround? For my manual trans 530i, the parts guys also could not figure out what fluid to use. Did they have any? No, they did not think so, not sure where it was, no one ever wanted to change it before (now that one I can believe). Instead, my mechanic used Redline D4ATF for the transmission and a synthetic Mercedes gear oil for the rear differential. All is well so far. I did not notice an obvious difference in shift stiffness or characteristics when I switched to the D4ATF, so I'm pleased. I use Redline MTL in my 1981 320i.

Re: My dealer in NJ and his mechanics all acted
As a e46 bmw owner, I had the same issue of getting dealers change tranny fluid. None of the NJ dealers was willing to do it. They said they couldn't even sell me the fluid since they only had it in big drums. I finally figured out one could buy it from Audi dealers, since the audi A4 and Bmw E46 use the same tranny. Not sure about the E90s. But I believe if you find out who builds the bimmer trannies, you should be able to find the fluid. I finally gave up asking dealers to change the fluid. And figured I would probably just drive the car for 100k and sell it. Right now it has 85k on it and car runs strong.
