    RunFlats saved me!

    I've been following all of the complaints about run-flats on this board. Here is my story. I was driving my e90 like a real jack-[Oops!] and my co-workers were in the car with me including boss. Merging on the highway from the on-ramp, going faster than the car could handle for this particular bank I started to skid toward the side of the road... Brakes could not save me nor did I apply them liberally. The vehicle went over the curb and in to the weeds off the road. I was sure that at minimum my low profile tires were blown out, side of my car all scraped up and my Sport Package wheels all dented.

    Not a single scratch on my car anywhere. All I could find was some dirt and weeds wedged around the mud shields. And the car tracks straight as it always did. Grant it I learned my lesson. I just wish my boss wasn't in the car. I feel really bad. To make a long story short, Run Flats rule! The noise and the impact from hitting the curb alone I could not have imagined the sidewalls could take such punishment at that high speed. The only thing different about this setup is that I just wish the tires would squeal a bit before reaching a threshold and just totally lossing traction. The threshold is impossible to predict unlike my previous cars.

    The car doesn't drive any different but is it worth getting it checked out? I'll never be doing this again, but the emberrasment alone in front of my boss is enough to ruin my weekend.

    was it a 325i / 330i or xi?

    What were your tires psi, you should check again.
    Do you think you could have powered out of those corners with the xi?

    Will your unemployment check cover the cost of

    an alignment?
    This falls into the category of having every head injury checked out by a doctor, even if you think you're OK.
    Have a mechanic put the car up and inspect your suspension carefully. Check the wheels and tires too.
    And have the car aligned because you've probably wacked things around real good.

    Well we didn't actually hit anything or go in a ditch, I think you are over reacting with having ourselves checked out! The g forces were no more than .90 g's that all the car can handle. Its a 328i S/P, probably the best out of all e90's in terms of handling capability. The xi or 335's would have been worse as they are heavier. I drove it on a 300 mile trip yesterday down south and I did't notice any difference. But I'll get it checked out when I have get back just to be safe.

    It's not the run flats

    If you hit the curb going fast enough your entire wheel and suspension would have been toast . Since BMW's are run flat examples here's what 997tt wheel looks like after a joy ride similar to what you describe .

    Runflats suck and your wheels are probably bent...

    a good way to tell for sure is remove them and put them on a balancer. You probably already know it but driving like that with others in the car is way off base. Make sure you're alone in the car and on the road next time. I'm glad nobody was injured.

    There won't be a next time. Yes I feel really bad that I freightened my passangers. Let my experience be a lesson for others without the mental agony I went through.

    But the car went on a left this morning. Amazingly the wheels are not bent on the inside and or out (although I didn't have them balanced but there is no vibration). There does not appear to be physical damage from visual inspection (ie. leaks, cracks etc.). Seriously how could you guys claim that the stiffer walls of Runflats do not make a difference???

    I'll give you the stiffer walls do make a

    difference.
    The ride has been widely reported to be more unpleasantly harsh, and the less compliant stiff sidewalls make for less agile handling. The whole point of radial tires originally was to have very flexible sidewalls in order to keep the contact patch close against the road for maximum adhesion.
