NorCal VANOS Clinic: May 30th & 31st
I decided to start a new thread specific for the NorCal clinic. The original thread regarding the SoCal event is here
WHAT: Replace the seals (all VANOS units on M52, S52, M52TU and M54) and bearing race (single-VANOS only on M52 and S52) with the Beisan kit. You can read more about the symptoms and the fix in the FAQ section of the Beisan website
WHEN: Saturday May 30th and Sunday May 31st
WHERE: Scott Petit's house (Modesto, CA)
WHO: BMW Z3s and Z4s
I will post more details and they became available. Meanwhile I would really appreciate if people interested in doing this could send me an email ([email protected]) with their name and last 7 digits of the VIN. It's just to keep track of it an set up a mailing list.

Being able to schedule people is also a reason...
...for the email.
I will probably manage to do 3 per day... Maybe 4 if there's not too many Z4s (it takes a little bit longer because of the tight fitting of the engine).
Of course if somebody else feel comfortable in getitng his/her hands dirty is more than welcome. A thing that I noticed to work quite well is putting 2 cars side by side: I work on one and another person works on the other.
I'm planing to come up with a schedule 2 weeks before the event.

For S52, do you recommend the DrVanos kit?
staqe 1 or the kit you folks are going to use? I can bring the three tools necessary to fix the cams. Saturday a possibility? I can get as dirty as need be and can help out a bit Sunday as well.
How much extra time is needed to change both tensioners since we're in there?
Grazie for doing this!

For the S52 and single-VANOS M52 I would...
... recommend the new kit that Beisan is developing: it will include the seals (that cause the loss of pressure) and the bearing race (which cause the rattle). That's what DrVanos replaces in his kits (he also clean them...).
The thing is I cannot at this time guarantee 100% that the new kit from Beisan will be available: he's in the final stage of production and he said that as soon as he has it ready to ship he will let me know. He said he's expecting them to be ready by the end of April, but he didn't want to give me his 100% commitment.
I can look up the procedure to replace the chain tensioners, but quite honestly it is a maintenance free item so there is no real reason to replace them.
The cam locking tool I would need is made of 4 parts:
1) pin to lock the crankshaft
2) blocks to lock the camshafts
3) sprocket turner
4) pin to lock the upper camshaft chain tensioner
Here's how it looks like:

ZD, on the tensioners, one is a screw in. 10
seconds tops. The other is easy to do while the VANOS is out. One cap screw.
Those tools ZTre is picturing are what I have to loan, I can bring them this Sat, or we can meet up later if you don't want to store them for 2 months.
I did the VANOS in the 328, wasn't too hard at all

Thanks Giznaz!!! ZD, I'll call my dealer and...
...give you the best quote on the parts. Could email me the last 7 digits of your VIN?
Giznaz, may I ask if I could bring the tool back with me in SoCal: I have someone with an ///M coupe with the S52 who asked me if I could help him replace his VANOS seals. I will mail it back one we're done.

Since this is close to home, I should be able to..
help all weekend.
I'll bring the vise (maybe a vice or two, too) and a trunk full of hand tools.
You can put me on the schedule as last or as a fill-in to do along side one you are doing. If we wear you out and we don't get mine done that weekend, I can getterdone later, myself.
Looks like you'll have plenty of people willing to get their hands dirty.
Thanks for setting this up, let me know when I can send you some money.

Added James to the list. Who else?
Dave, I'm still waiting on the last 7 of your VIN. Let me know so I can also give you a quote on the cost of the two tensioner.
I spoke to Rajaie again yesterday. We discussed why on his instruction for the single-VANOS he doesn't say to use the tool to lock the tensioner. There's two issues with it: the first is that you gotta tight it at ~1Nm which is extremely low torque that most torque wrench don't have. The other is that he tried it with and without and didn't notice any difference.
