I got the part #s from real oem dot com
and filled out the parts request form on their website requesting a quote. How much do they want for the red line? I'm ordering the Amsoil for about $9.79 a qt. On a site note, I still haven't figured out how to subscribe to posts on this forum :(

Added some more folks...
Looks right now we have 9 cars showing up for the events. I haven't heard back from Rajaie yet about the upgraded single-VANOS kit.
I think we'll ba able to do many cars since it looks like many folks are willing to get their hands dirty...

Take Pictures! Envious - and Questions
Being on the east coast I am jealous, sounds like a great get together/clinic.
Some questions/comments:
(1) Love to hear how this effects performance.
(2) Would love to see pics, and comments/concerns, any problems etc, for those of us who are considering this DIY.
(3) Is this still a subject to debate? BMW official position? Did they ever upgrade these O rings to date?

UPDATE: SoCal and Single-VANOS
This weekend we had the SoCal VANOS clinic and I think it's fair call it a success. At some point we had about 20/25 people hanging out, more than 10 cars showed up and we were able to service 7 VANOS units between Saturday and Sunday.
Everyone noticed a difference in the behavior of the car and comment ranged from "I feel power I never remember being there" to "The car feels smoother and overall more powerful".
Now regarding the single-VANOS kit to address both the seals and the bearing race. I spoke to Rajaie and he said HE HAS IT READY. This means that these of you with first version of the M52 (up to 1998) and the S52 ///M (up to 2000) both using the Single-VANOS can be fully addressed (both seals and bearing race). Once again, the seals will improve the way the VANOS responds to the ECU while the bearing race will address the rattling.
Right now I have 9 cars (7 Double-VANOS and 2 Single-VANOS) signed up for the NorCal clinic:
1) Steve (2001 Z3 2.5i) - Double-VANOS
2) Tony (2000 Z3 2.8) - Double-VANOS
3) Jean (2001 Z3 3.0i) - Double-VANOS
4) Scott (2000 Z3 2.8) - Double-VANOS
5) James (Single-VANOS M52) - Single-VANOS
6 & 7) Rich (2000 Z3 2.3 & E39 528i) - Double-VANOS & Single-VANOS
8) Ken (2001 Z3 2.3) - Double-VANOS
9) Robert (1999 Z3 2.8) - Double-VANOS
NOTE: I will NOT have extra kits with me so you need sign up by emailing me you contacts (Name, email, phone) and last 7 digits of your VIN

UPDATE: Rattle solution available for NorCal
I had a chance to meet Rajaie in person this weekend at B_i_m_m_e_r_f_e_s_t and he supplied me with some kits for the rattle solution.
The VANOS rattle is mostly noticeable on the Single VANOS ///M cars and double VANOS 330i ZHP. The reason is the different cams that these two engine have which exacerbate a failure of all VANOS unit.
The rattle noise is often referred to as the sound of "marbles in a can". The source appears to be the play that helical gears experience with time which is transferred to the bearing in the VANOS piston. By tightening the tolerance in bearing seat the rattling is eliminated.
I will have this available for the NorCal people if anyone is interested, but here's my recommendation:
NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT NECESSARY:
- if you have a double-VANOS car with stock non-ZHP cams
- you're not planing on installing aftermarket cams
HIGHLY RECOMMANDED:
- if you have a single-VANOS car (particularly if equipped with an S52)
- ZHP package or any aftermarket cams
