    Tuning/diagnostic advice needed

I'm helping my son get my '86 535i emission tested so my son and daughter can use it to get to their jobs this summer. It didn't pass emmissions with the following info:
    ______________________________
Cruise HC PPM = 86/150 Pass
    Cruise CO% = 1.97/1 Fail
    CO +CO2% = 15.37/6 Fail
    ______________________________
Idle HC PPM = 611/220 Fail
    Idle CO% = 1.67/1.2 Fail
    Idle CO+CO2 = 12.97/6 Fail

Idle RPM was 680 on the slip.

    What I found initially:

    cracked throttle boot - replaced
cracked vacuum air line - replaced

After making these repairs the idle was high and mid to upper rpm performance seemed poor so I did some research and thought I should check out the Throttle position sensor (TPS). When we checked the pins marked 2, 18 & 3 we weren't getting any continuity and when we checked for 5 volts with the ignition on we didn't get any voltage on plug pin 18. The Bentley states the next test is on the ECU harness. Do you agree or should I be looking elsewhere?

    Thanks,

The idle speed after replacing the boot and vacuum line is 1000 rpm.

I'm not entirely sure how the TPS figures in on the 535. But there are some other things I'd wonder about. Is the coolant temp sensor good? How old are the O2 sensor and cat converter? Did the emission test result include numbers for NOx also?

Tune up, oil change, 02 sensor and new cat.,

valve adjustment w/gasket, failed practically everything...needs alot of attention to play catch up on maintanence. Then take for a pre-test. I'ts a hassle but blame the PO for neglect.
