Brit needs help please
Hi. I need some help and advice on renting an apartment in or very near west Palm Beach Florida.
i also need some advice on purchasing a car or SUV for a few thousand dollars. With the current recession what sort of SUV and model year can I expect. Reliability is the main priority. Do I need to pay florida tax on top of the purchase price? I know the usual mechanical things to look out for but I would like to know about, title, inspection and any taxes and how to go about registering with the DMV.
Is leasing a good idea? Can I get lease on a Suv thats a few years old?
Anyone near West palm beach? How safe is it and what areas should I avoid etc..
Thanks so much for any input.

don't know anything about WPB...but...
SUV's should be available...a dime a dozen! Find a zip code for West Palm Beach and do a search on Autotrader for that zip code. Chevy Suburbans seem to be the most reasonably priced. With the economy, these behomoths tank in prices rapidly! Good luck. Matt

Brit needs help please
Hi,
I now live south of WPB - in Pompano Beach (30 minutes south from WPB).
1. To find an appartment in good neigborhood - go contact one of local Real Estate Offices. There is a lot of smaller (and cheaper) cities around WPB.
2. Yes you will have to pay 6% Florida sales tax on purchase of used or new car. Title is about $100, but cost of licence tag is according to the car weight.
I hope the above helps.

Re: Brit needs help please
so I pay the price of the car to the seller.
Then I get the title signed to me.
Then I go to the tag office and pay the 6% tax plus the cost of the title at @ $100 plus the cost of the tag which depends on the weight of the car. I then have to register it with the county of west palm beach?
seems very complicated than in UK.
What about the inspection certificate or any other documents I should ask for from the seller beside service history?
thanks in advance

No - Tag office does all that (for a fee). You give them seller's tittle, money and proof of Insurance and next day you get Licence plate anda tag for one (or two years - depending how much you pay) and State of Florida mails to you the new Tittle with your name on it.
There is no car certification any more in Florida - they do not even ask to see your car at all.

I'd advise that you take the seller, money and...
...title to the DMV to make sure all's legit, being out of the country and all. Many scam artists out there.
I know the area pretty well - where in the WPB area will you be working? Traffic is a bear and it pays to be aware.
Contact me at e31v12@gmail.com for further details as I have some contacts in the area.
Btw, http://cars.com may be better for searching as it contains private newspaper ads as well as the usual dealer spew.
