Gener. light always on, 73 Bav

Last night I came home from a friends house, the car is running perfect. Turn the car off and pull out the key and the Gener. (alternator) light just stays on with no key in the ignition. When I put in the key and turn the ignition on, the light goes out, opposite of what it should do, when the car is running, no light, seems normal, so I disconnected the battery. Went out this morning, hooked up the battery, same thing, the light goes on, no key. A friend suggested disconnecting the alternator wires so I pulled the 3 pin connector on the alt and the light went out. I'm not sure this is conclusive. Anyone else ever had this issue?

photo shows how it should look w/ key "on" . . .

Have you checked the voltage regulator?
