1st time changing own oil. Any tips/warnings/etc?

I know this is about as basic as it gets but I just want to be sure to
do everything properly. Suggestions on weight(live in hot/humid Miss.) or on the type or brand.

Type and weight depend on which engine you have (S52, S54 for the Ms).
Check owner's manual. S54 is more particular. In my S52, I'm using a Castrol synthetic.

As for the rest, careful removing the insert (can be messy), replace o-rings, get the torque right on the hold-down bolt. Pretty simple.
