    1999 M Coupe...KEEP OR SELL NEXT YEAR.............

    OK...I have a 1999 MCoupe and it has approx. 172k miles...runs strong and no major issues. I have had it since June of 2000. Next year I am in the Market to buy another car...hopefully either an M5 or Lotus Exige. Should I keep my Coupe or trade in when I buy my next car. Will the MCoupe ever be a collector car????....any advice greatly appreciated

    I am a keeper. Question , How many times you

    change the shocks on her ? I am pushing 70 K and thinking about doing shocks and plugs.Great to see you still going strong at 170K. I rotate my M coupe with an 84 635 csi.Keeps both cars feeling fresh.The coupe would be a good mate for an M 5 .

    With that kind of milage they won't give you much on a trade, keep it and buy the M5. You will then have an incredible high tech super sedan and a realively simple sports car, best of all worlds.
    I recently tried to get collector insurance on my 99 mcoupe which has similar milage and the insurance company denied it because they feel there is no collector interest.

    I think it will be a collector car.

    With fewer than 2700 ever made, and being such a focused enthusiast car, it's bound to have collector value in the future. I've read at least a couple magazine articles that tend to agree. Will it have the collector status of, say, a CSL or 2002 turbo? Probably not, but then again, look at the E30 M3 - it has definite collector status, and there were far more of those made than M Coupes. Having said that, though, the S52 powered examples will likely hold somewhat less appeal than the S54s, due simply to the latter's rarity, but any M Coupe could some day be fairly sought after.

    If you're keeping it for its possible collector status, at best that will be many many years in the future. The real reason to keep it is that even if it never becomes a collector car, every time you drive it will give you a charge like no other car. The fact that you've kept it as long as you have is evidence enough that it's the value to you that makes it worth having, not the value it might some day have to anyone else.

    Bottom line, if you're financially and logistically able to keep it while adding other cars to the stable, then..... well, you know what you should do.

    Sell it

    If you keep it, will you drive it? Will you maintain it? Or will the car just sit around and slowly decay?

    Why not let someone else enjoy the car?

    IMHO, I don't think a 170K S52 coupe will ever have collector interest.

    I have a similar dilemma with my Dakar 2000 coupe, only about 71K miles. There are (this is hard to say) too many vehicles in or near my driveway, & I don't use the coupe for commute anymore since my wife retired. I posted it a couple of times and the few people who saw the signs in the window had no idea what the "M" part meant. With a little more financial flexibility now, I think I'll wait until the market gets a litle more relaxed.

    I once owned the world's most wonderful motorcycle. I loved that bike - 1987 BMW K75s, first production year of the s model.

    One day I realized I never had the "big" accident, and, it was a good time to quit riding.

    But I couldn't bear to give up that bike. For a few years, the bike got a yearly, complete inspection II. Of course, one year the maintaince slipped. And one year became two year, two years became ...

    The bike became an unrideable mess - fuel pump frozen, dead battery, rusted fasteners, brake pads rusted to rotors, and more.

    I still regret killing that bike.

    Now my philosophy is when I'm done driving a vehicle, it's time to let the vehicle meet a new owner. I'd rather take a monetary loss, then the regret.
