88 535is wont start
I have a friend who has a 88 535is that ran out of fuel and fried the pump. He replaced both pumps, filters, pressure regulator, coolant temp switch, and main relay. His fuel pump relay is working fine. Car continues to not start, it turns over and will back fire on letting go of key. Car ran well before this, so not sure of bad sensors. The only problem he had was a occasional hiccup at freeway speeds. Any suggestions?

sure sounds like main relay but
did he purge the fuel system by running the fuel pumps for a minute or so?

He replaced the main relay and he didn't fully tighten down the fpr so the system got purged by accident. He has continued to try to start to no avail over a week or so. My guess is the cold start valve and he is hours awy from me so I can't diagnose it myself.

would that prevent spark?
Has he checked whether there's spark?
The cold start valve might make it cranky, but wouldn't expect these kinds of symptoms.-Paul

Had the same ....
..problem. There was a great letter in either the Roundel or Bimmer that clued me to the OBC RELAY. NOT the OBC or ECU. It's located way on the left side of and under the steering column. Just a black box w one green & one white connector. Jump the two green wires at the back of the white connector. If the relay is bad the car should start right up. To fix you can open the relay box and reflow the solder joints, but I just permanenly jumped these wires rather than reflow or replace the relay. This only disables the OBC antitheft feature. Never use it anyway. Worth a shot, Luck, petalumabud -'87 535is, '85 635, '72Tii.

headlights work,then not
Headlights would not go on then i wiggeled some relays and behold they work, but wonder if i should trust her at night,bad relays??any ideas

BMW main relays are an odd ball configuration. Are you sure he got the right Main relay with 2 87s ? 86 528e swarz SO special
86 528e mostly burgundrot (grape)
88 528e lach silber (bormann6)
