instant stall

76-02 just died while driving at normal speed. Engine turns over easily and tries to start but instantly dies each time without actually running. My first thought was "not getting gas" but I pulled the line and and found heavy flow of fuel to the Solex carb. The problem occured instantly with no signs of poor performance or rough engine. Up to that instant it was running fine.

Anyone else see this and have ideas?

Don,

as Roy mentioned, does sound electrical; if still on points, etc.check the condensor wire, make sure it has a tight connection.

Thanks, guys. But if it were electrical wouldn't it not ignite at all? It does start momentarily(like for a second)and then just dies.

How about the cleaning the idle jets of the Solex and/or maybe a good Solex cleaning overall.

Finally hope to get some time back on car this weekend, although they're predicting record lows in Dallas. I'd still be surprised if a carb problem would occur instantly while driving.......but will check it out plus anything obvious electrical. Has me baffled at this point..... thanks for the advice.

if it has a 32/36 weber dcddgav carb, check the electrical wire to the electrical anti dieseling switch ( engine side of the carb). otherwise check for a vacuum leak on the intake manifold - and don't forget the brake booster.
