Windows 7 looks to be a little better about preventing some of these attacks. Although it's just a matter of time before the bastages figure out a way around that.

Our university has left things fairly open. They're really fast about killing the port of an infected PC once it shows up on the network, but they don't do any content filtering other than an IP block on some of the more notorious networks. It's up to the departmental sys admins to lock down PCs. That creates its own set of issues, though.

ScriptLogic just came out with a freebie that looks like it might let a sys admin fine tune permission levels so that user level folks and run updates to Adobe Reader and so on without having admin privileges.

Right now my users (except students) have individual admin accounts they can access to "run as" if they need to install something. It's worked well so far.______________________________________________ ______________

...there are some smart users/kids out there who have figured out that there are proxies to avoid the filter. As we find them we block them, but new ones are always popping up.

Some applications we run require elevated user permissions. We have developed "run as" scripts for these.

I've got to believe that the big suppliers haven't overlooked that market segment (no matter how small: wouldn't want to offend all the Mac-o-lytes by ignoring them).

I'm already suffering from technology overload keeping up with all the electronic gadgets I use every day.

I've got an office network, home network, a scanner, 6 printers, 2 cell phones, a digital camera, a video recorder, a 2 way remote starter for my truck, programmable thermostats, alarms, door and gate openers, Netflix, an automatic litter box, automatic blood pressure cuffs, computerized treadmill, a big plasma connected to FIOS with a dvr and wireless surround sound AND an e39 540.

If I add another device, programming sequence, login or error message to my day I might go postal. So, the short answer is no. HD Fios with the dvr and netflix on surround sound is adequate for me. I'm pretty sure there are solutions, but I haven't even bothered to look.

Why do you think I asked what AVS is. We are not all technogeeks, bey and M_six excluded of course. I really don't worry about virus's. The biggest problems on the mac are vulnerabilities caused by Microsoft word, flash and browser holes.

and the answer is no, I go commando. I have a visiting nerd that beefed up the firewall software at the office and changed a bunch of settings on the wireless router and the macs. Since then the only problem I had were on the 2 pc's so I have AVS running on them.
