Question for computer guru's re: Internet ID
I'm considering writing an email to turn in illegal activity within an organization that involves government corruption, but want to be completely anonymous. Obviously I can create a fake email account on one of the numerous sites, but it will still be linked to my home IP.
I realize I could go to the local Kinkos, create an email account, send the email, and just in case they log the account access, I could return to another Kinko's or similar place to access the account. However there may end up being security cameras if they really wanted to find out who sent the email.
My question is regarding places that have Wi-Fi. If I take a laptop, or use a smart phone to create/access an email account, is there any way they can trace an email back to your device? Or when you send something it is only linked to the place providing the Wi-Fi.
There is always US Mail as well, but it is easier to send to multiple parties with an email.

The MAC address of your wireless card...
...in theory could give you away. Some people write software to cloak (spoof) MAC addresses. Here is an example (not an endorsement)...

Some things you should consider
Check here for info on the whistle blower law and its protections
You should also consult sites like the one that follows. I am not, however, endorsing any one site over the other.

simple
Go over to your ex-girlfriend's house, say... to pick up some CDs you left there. While she's taking a dump, login to her email account and send it from there.
Of course, the fact that you posted this issue on a public forum that is scoured regularly by Google sort of obviates any need for secrecy, don't you think?
(and remember that while you're at that WiFi hotspot, there is almost certainly at least one security camera watching you)<br />

The whistle blower law also grants the informer
A good example that was in the news and had a book written about happened here in my little home town.... the priest(father) and another doc made some good coin from being the whistle blower.
I know some of the people involved....a large, very large portion of it was crap, but anyway....
You might now want to be hidden.
Here is a link to the book
