Electrical dilemma:( I know this should be (m)

a piece of cake but I'm not sure how to do this. I want to replace a switch in my kitchen that turns on 6 hi hats with a Lutron dimmer I bought. The old switch has 4 wires attached but a ground is not one of them. I bought a Lutron 3 way dimmer that has 4 screws, a ground connection on top, 2 screws on 1 side and 1 screw on the other to attach the wires. The 6 hi hats in the kitchen are turned on & off from 3 locations. The first pic is the old set-up with the 4 wires attached to the switch and the 2 ground wires crimped by themselves, obviously not attached to the switch. The other pics are the new switch. Can this be done or did I buy the wrong 3-way dimmer switch??

    not sure what you mean...

A "3-way" wall switch is one that permits control of a light (or whatever) from two locations. The "three ways" are off, onA and onB.

If you want to control your lights from three locations, then you need a 4-way switch. This switch is located between two (or more) 3-way switches.

I am sure there are plenty of wiring diagrams on the 'Net. So go check them out and see what it is you're really trying to do. If you have questions, let me know.

Re: not sure what you mean...

A cursory web search told me that a 3 way switch can be used if the lighting is controlled from 2 "or more" locations, hence my confusion. I'll keep looking. I just don't want to pay someone $50.00+ to do something I could do in 5 mins:)))

It's fairly easy, especially if all you are doing is converting from a standard switch to a dimmer. You just have to identify the circuit you're working with and get the appropriate hardware.

How many switches currently control the circuit you're working on?
Millar is on to something

I think you may have a 4 way switch. What that might mean is; three switches are operating this group of lights (2 three ways & 1 four way) <img src="http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p225/smwit/flies.jpg"height=2width=2>

3 switches (including 1st pic) control the 6 hi hats in our kitchen. All 3 are just on/off switches. Just need to find the easiest way to put the dimmer in. This is the dimmer I bought.

here's my guess as to what is going on

    1. You have a 4-way circuit already (three switches controlling the light circuit).

    2. You want to replace one of (ie., any of the three existing switches) with a dimmer.

    3. You purchased a 3-way dimmer switch.

    4. To start your replacement effort, you picked one of the three switches at random and pulled it apart. The switch you happened to pick is the (one and only) 4-way switch in the circuit. That is why it has four terminal screws.

    5. Either purchase a 4-way dimmer switch (assuming they make such a thing), or put this one back together and choose one of the other switches to use as the replacement switch (the other switches should all be 3-ways like the one you bought).

NOTE: Without giving it too much thought, I'm not sure how a 3-way dimmer will work in a 4-way circuit. If I had to guess, I'm betting you'll only get dimming effect when THAT switch is on (as opposed to when the lights are turned on from a different switch).

    additional info...

You can dim a 4-way circuit (or more) from all switch locations using Lutron's Maestro switches. We have these in our house (though I don't think we have any 4-way circuits) and they are pretty nice. They have built-in night lights (for switch location, not to see the room), and you tap them to activate (no toggle switches).

There is a lot of info on Lutron's website.
