just about lost my dinner

and I haven't even eaten yet. One of our cats - "AJ" - turns 19 next month. He has a situation wherein several of the claws on his front paws grow in "funny", curling back around to contact the front of his paw pads. If left to grow too long, they actually pierce the front of his paw.

The boychild just came into my office and told me AJ had gotten stuck to a screen door, and that it looked like his claws needed trimming.

Which in turn caused me to suddenly realize I couldn't remember when the last time was that I trimmed the claws.

So I got the trimmers, the cat, and the magnifiying bench light and went to work. First paw went ok - close but no damage. However, the second (front) paw was a different story: of his four normal claws, two had pierced his paw, one so severely that the skin around the claw was splayed back and rotten (it smelled horrible). I had to numb the paw with some Bactine, section the claw with some of my fancy metal cutters, then extract the tip from the paw with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Needless to say, AJ wasn't too happy about it. But when the puss started to come out of the hole, that's when I became very unhappy - suddenly recalling the :)Evil/Bauer horror of earlier this week. Now he's sitting in the girlchild's lap with the affected paw in a cup of warm water and epsom salts.

that maggots are actually used medicinally!

I showed the video to someone who I thought would be creeped out, and she said someone she knew had had maggots applied to a wound on the leg to remove all the dead tissue!!!

Am I happy that my chest wound healed well ~ Can you imagine having worms between your b00bs?!?!? :D
